(Faculty of Education, Bayero University, Kano, 2018-08) Abdulsalam, Oladimeji Sholagberu; Kayode, Sadiq Toyin; Najimu, A. H.
This paper examines community development in Nigeria with emphasis on the institution, agencies, policies and strategies employed to bring about the much needed community development in the country. In the attempt to do this , clarification of concepts like community, community development was carried out, which formed the theoretical basis of the analysis. It was found out that efforts made by the Nigerian government through several strategies like the nation's developmental plan from independent to date which were x-rayed did not bring about meaningful development. Similarly international organizations, and regional strategies had not led o any significant improvement in the living condition of the community dwellers and community development in general. The paper therefore, concludes among other things that for rapid and sustained community development to take place, the lopsided and urban based development process must be reversed to community based and bottom-up approach, government to continue to create conducive environment for community development to thrive, change of attitudes and orientation by all a sundry, particularly the leadership class in Nigeria in order to minimize corruption and mismanagement of resources.
