Design, Specification and Implementation of a Distributed Home Automation System
(Sciencedirect, 2016-01-01) Otuoze, Abdulrahaman; Abdulrahman, TA; NT, Surajudeen-Bakinde; Isiwekpeni, OH
This work presents the design and model implementation of a novel home automation system applying the Internet of Things (IoT) technology. It seeks simplified design protocols for developing a robust home automation system to deal with the problems of complexity, multiple incompatible standards and the resulting expenses in the existing systems. The embedded system features the ubiquitous low-cost 32-bit ESP8266 System-on-chip (SoC) module interfaced to some sensors and actuators for interaction in the home. Flexibility in the remote access, operation and management is achieved through HTML5 based intuitive mobile and web GUI applications. Web Application Messaging Protocol (WAMP) is deployed to ensure that individual applications and systems seamlessly communicate with a relatively high level of security using robust web service security protocol. This system offers a cost-effective and efficient solution, because the costs of a dedicated public IP address and a high-end computer are excluded, which are present mostly in other solutions.

Implementation of a Cloud-Based Home Automation System
(CPJ, 2016) Otuoze, Abdulrahaman; NT, Surajudeen-Bakinde; Isiwekpeni, OH; Abdulrahman, TA
Home automations provide full control and flexible monitoring of home appliances for increased comfort, efficient energy use, costs saving, improved safety and security, and have driven the development of various smart homes technologies. This paper presents the implementation of a home automation system utilizing the Internet of Things (IoT) technology. This work tackles the problems of complexity and incompatible standards inherent in the existing home automation solutions using a robust distributed computing approach. The embedded system operates on dual Advanced Virtual RISC (AVR) microcontrollers, ATmega328p and ATmega16L, interfaced to input and output modules – sensors, actuators, Wi-Fi shield, LCD, keypad etc. – for interactions with users, appliances and the environment. The HTML5 based intuitive mobile and web applications, developed for the system, induces unrestricted flexibility in the system operations and management. The system deploys a novel Web Application Messaging Protocol (WAMP), implemented with WebSocket full duplex and persistent connection protocol and JSON data serialization, for seamless individual applications and subsystems integration with a relatively high level of security through web service security protocol. This cloud-based home automation solution has lower implementation cost compared to the existent systems because, as it removes the expensive costs of on-premise high end computers and dedicated public IP addresses.

IMPLEMENTATION OF AN SMS AND VOICE-CONTROLLED ELECTRONIC BILLBOARD
(Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, 2016) Otuoze, Abdulrahaman; NT, Surajudeen-Bakinde; Ojo, E.S.; Akindiya, D.J.; Ibidun, B.F.; Adeniyi, A.
The use of electronic medium in communication system is on geometric rise due to its flexibility, attractiveness, speed and efficiency. Various modes have been adapted in the transformation from the use of traditional billboards to electronic billboards in information dissemination. These modes include colour coated glass paper display, reflective mode display method, on-board editing of the content of an electronic billboards etc. with complicated problem of modifying the displayed content. This paper presents an implemented short message service (SMS) Controlled Electronic Billboard with Audio Output to enable ease and comfort of the administrator who determines the content of the billboard from any location. The input can be from a mobile phone or a web-based SMS application, provided the source is linked to a service provider. The billboard basically contains a microcontroller unit (AT89S52), a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) modem and a matrix of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). The input to the display comprises a SIM900 Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) modem that takes care of the SMS and voice call reception for broadcasting any voice call placed on the SIM to the target audience. The text is received by the SIM modem and is transferred to the microcontroller which decodes the message using a set of rules. The decoded message is then used to automatically switch ON and OFF appropriate LEDs in order to display the character received as SMS on the screen of the billboard. Also, Voice call functionality has been incorporated to enable it receive calls and broadcast the audio message with a reasonable sound level to the target audience. It was designed, constructed, tested and found to meet the design specifications.
