Item Arabic and Islamic Studies Teachers’ Perceived Problems Associated with the Attainment of the Universal Basic Education Goals in North-central, Nigeria(Published by the Department of Adult and Primary Education, University of Ilorin, 2020-08-15) Musa Siddiq, ABDULLAHI; Abdulhameed Ishola, Jimba; Musa, SALISUThis paper examined the Arabic and Islamic Studies Arabic and Islamic Studies teachers’ perceived factors militating against the attainment of the UBE goals in North central, Nigeria. The population for the study was all the UBE teachers in North-central, Nigeria. Simple random sampling technique was used to select nine hundred and twenty-four teachers teaching Arabic and Islamic Studies in the central. The researchers adopted descriptive survey research type while structure questionnaire with 18 question items was used to collect data from the respondents. The instrument was validated by three experts and yielded a coefficient of 0.75 when subjected to a test-retest reliability procedure. The percentage was used to answer research question one, t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used to tested hypotheses postulated at 0.05 alpha level. The study revealed that poor condition of service of the UBE teachers, poor and unconducive teaching-learning environment for the implementation of the UBE curriculum, inadequacy of educational facilities, inadequate funding and mismanagement of the little fund available were among the factors militating against the attainment of the UBE goals. Also, the respondents’ gender, qualifications and teaching experience did not influence their perceptions significantly. Therefore, it was concluded that the UBE curriculum implementation process requires urgent attention to redress the problems so as to achieve the set UBE goals.Item A Comparative Analysis of Arabic Students Performance in Mock and Basic Education Certificate Examination in Ilorin-Metropolis, Kwara State, Nigeria(Published by the Department of Arts Education, Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, Ilorin,Nigeria, 2020-07-22) Musa Siddiq, ABDULLAHI; Musa, SALISUThe performance of students in a particular examination must have the ability to predict or be used as a yardstick for measuring their performance in another examination. This study focuses on a comparative analysis of Arabic students’ performance in Mock and Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in Ilorin-metropolis, Kwara State. All the Junior Secondary School III students in the metropolis constituted the study population, while all Arabic students that sat for both mock and BECE constituted the target population. Purposive and stratified sampling techniques were used to select the results of candidates that sat for Arabic in both the Mock and Basic Education Certificate Examination. Proforma was used to collect 1,286 candidates’ results in the Mock and the BECE. The percentage was used to describe the demographic data of the respondents. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while the null hypotheses were tested with the t-test statistics. The findings revealed that the students’ general performance in both the MOCK and BECE Arabic is at credit level, and that significant difference exists between the performance of Arabic students’ in the Mock and BECE. Generally, students’ performance in both the MOCK and BECE was relatively high. The study recommended that Teachers of Arabic should put more efforts to sustain their students’ performance in the subject. The students are encouraged not to take both the Mock and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) with levity. They should complement the efforts of their parents, teachers, school administration and government by studying voraciously in order to sustain their performance so that they can come out with flying colours.
