Item Corruption in the Nigerian Judicial System(Faculty Of Social And Management Sciences, Taraba State University, Jalingo, 2023-04) Jimoh Buhari Edun; ATIKU, Abdullateef Abiodun; Monsurat Isiaka; Ojiezele Oriabure MondayThis study x-rayed the causes and implications of corruption and other related problems in Nigerian the judicial system. In order to answer the research questions, descriptive cum qualitative approach was employed. This instrument, coupled with mail interview guide, proved effective in collecting data from experts in different fields of human endeavour, such as correctional officers, criminologists, legal practitioners, and educationalists. The collected data were transcribed and coded, using Nvivo12 and was analyzed thematically. Findings revealed that the prevalence of corruption precedes the dispensation of unfair judgments; the existence of corruption leads to a situation in which bourgeoisies in the society get favoured in exchange for cash and other favours; corruption within the Nigerian Judicial System has actually led to the proliferation of criminal activities, the perpetrators of which routinely pay their way to evade justice; judicial corruption engenders a blased administration of justice; and the independence of the judiciary is necessary for democracy and the rule of law to thrive. Based on the findings, the study recommended the need to strategize reformations of policies that will suffice to efface, or enfeeble, the corruption bug which appears to have stung the Nigerian Judicial System for decadesItem THE INVOLVEMENT OF THE NIGERIA POLICE IN CURBING INSURGENCY IN NIGERIA(Department of Criminology & Security Studies, University of Ilorin, 2023-03) Monsurat Isiaka; Austin Oladele; Ismail Ayatullah Nasirudeen; Abubakar Abdulrahman; Hassan, Adijat KuburatThe 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria makes clear the makeup, organization, and operational oversight of the Nigeria Police Force. The preservation of human life and material goods is the main focus of this, among others. Currently, Nigeria is fighting an insurgency that has decimated several areas of the north-eastern region of the country. There is a paucity of research on the Nigeria Police Force's contribution to this conflict, despite the fact that the majority of studies have focused on how the Armed Forces have attempted to quell insurgency and terrorist activity. By highlighting the existence of certain of Nigeria's police special units like Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD), K9, Forensics, and Intelligence, a portion of their tasks can be comprehended. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the Nigerian police have helped to quell insurgency in that country. The finding reveals that the Nigeria Police are also involved in the war against insurgency. However, the lack of sophisticated equipment is a major impediment which has hindered the effectiveness of the force. The conclusion of this study recommends, among others, that the Nigerian government should enter stronger bilateral and multilateral relations with high technologically advanced nations to purchase highly sophisticated equipment to combat the insurgents. Similarly, government should share experience with those nations that have successfully fought the menace in their respective domains in order to learn the best tactics to deploy in combating the war.Item THE NIGERIAN CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM(Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2022-02) Habeeb Abdulrauf Salihu; Monsurat Isiaka; Obasanjo Solomon Balogun; Tomisin Adedunmola Akangbe; Abdullahi Kayode IbrahimThis paper examines the roles of the Nigerian criminal justice actors- the police, courts and correctional service in justice administration and identifies some of the impending issues (including prison congestion, extrajudicial practices and pre-trial detention) affecting effective dispensation of justice, rehabilitation and reformation of prison inmates. Essentially it offers strategies on how to effectively address these issues within the context of legal and administrative reforms. The paper argued that for any criminal justice system to effectively protect lives and properties, safeguard the fundamental rights of individuals, and ensure fairness, rule of law must be allowed to guide the operations of justice institutions and administration of justice.
