    Assessment of Water Quality in a Nigerian Tertiary Hospital

    Water quality of a Nigerian tertiary Hospital with over three thousand staff and up to one thousand patients was investigated. The main source of water supply were the boreholes. Samples were collected from 6 Boreholes and two different brands of sachet water (packaged drinking water) and were tested for the following; pH, total solids, turbidity, total suspended solids, electrical conductivity, hardness, chloride, nitrate, sulphate, BOD, COD, DO, Iron, Copper, Lead, E. coli and Total Coliform. The results of the evaluations were compared with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Nigerian Standard for Drinking Water Quality (NSDWQ) to establish its suitability for human consumption. Statistical tests were conducted to compare experimental results with standards. From the tests conducted, five samples; A, C, D, E, and G have higher mean values for lead (Pb) more than prescribed limit of 0.05mg/l by WHO. Microbial in Sample B, C, D, E, F, and G were above the required standard of 0cfu in 100ml. From all the analysis conducted only sample H was found to be in conformity with the WHO and NSDWQ standards in terms of both the physicochemical and the bacteriological analysis. Lead can be removed by reverse osmosis process and the microbial contaminants can be removed by either boiling or by disinfection using chlorine

    Clean Water as a Source Reduction for Cholera: A Review of African Experience

    Uncontaminated water source is directly connected to improved sanitation and personal hygiene which is the key indicator responsible for the reduction of water related diseases globally. In the last four decades, statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Health Observatory (GHO) report showed that over 3.5 million cases of cholera were recorded in Africa with close to 400,000 cases recorded in Democratic Republic of Congo alone within the same period. This calls for concerted effort with less chances of re-occurrence necessitating this study which seeks to assess the importance of accessible clean water as a source reduction for cholera epidemic outbreak and re-occurrence in epidemic areas. The major parameters assessed include the causes, symptoms diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and control of cholera with emphasis on an engineering-based solution. The outcome of the study shows that cholera epidemic can be minimized and possibly eradicated by creating a sustainable platform for providing clean water for all. Improvements in water quality accompanied by other environmental interventions with education could prevent and reduce re-occurrence of faecal-oral transmission of cholera

    Modeling a covered drainage system for the reduction of malaria prevalence

    community-based, cross-sectional study design was adopted using 501 consented children under the age of 14 years from 200 households. Mathematical model for determining the relationship between malaria prevalence (MP) and features of the household surroundings was designed using multiple regression models. Children age was 75.0 ± 45.5 months (range = 3–168 months). MP was 29.9/100, Most of the houses 99.0% had open drainage immediately around their surrounding, 7.1% of the drainages were flowing while 91.9% were stagnant. Solid Wastes in Drains (SWD), Stagnation of Wastewater in Drains (STWD), Presence of Open Drains (POD), and Presence of Weeds (POW) significantly predicted MP while reduction in MP after a 12-months intervention was 14.4%. Features of the household surroundings contributed more to MP and covered drainage system could reduce the burden of malaria through free flow of wastewater. This engineering solution could be encouraged in communities with high MP.

    PRIORITIZATION OF ADAPTATION STRATEGIES FOR WATER SUPPLY AND DEMAND UNDER CLIMATE CHANGE AND ITS VARIABILITY IN ABUJA, NIGERIA

    Climate change and its impact have become a global and prime event of the 21st century. Its effects on almost all spheres of human existence are worrisome and the low awareness and complete disregard for its causes, impacts and adaptation strategies call for an urgent solution. One of its effects is a sharp variability in available water resources for human use. Created in 1976 and with a current population of over 1.6 million, Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city has a growing water supply deficit; occasioned by several factors including climate change. To mitigate the deficiency occasioned by climate change, this study has considered some adaptation strategies and prioritized them. A survey was conducted with the use of a structured questionnaire and hydro-metrological data was also gathered from various relevant agencies. By applying the Analytical Hierarchy Process as a Multicriteria Decision method in the comparison of suitable adaptation strategies, the manager’s strategy of sourcing for additional water resources had the highest priority vector of 0.4348 while the professional strategy of raising awareness to enhance consumer behavioural change was next with a vector of 0.3097. These two methods are thus recommended to mitigate against the effect of climate change on the water supply deficit in Abuja, Nigeria. The use of water saving devices ranked lowest and thus should be considered as the least attractive option
