Consumers’ Understanding and Usage of Food Labels in Purchasing Decisions in Kwara State, Nigeria
(Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ilorin, Kwara State Nigeria, 2025) T.B. Ajibade; K.Y. Belewu; M.F. Salami; D.O. Opaleke; E.T. Ajibade; C.B. Olatunbo
Food labels are the primary means of educating consumers on packaged content. With the rising urbanization in Nigeria and its corresponding change in lifestyle toward increased consumption of packaged food products, it is crucial to deepen consumers’ knowledge of food labels. The study aimed to evaluate consumer awareness of food labels in Kwara State, Nigeria; understand their impact on purchasing behavior, analyze the factors influencing consumer understanding of food labels, and identify constraints to their usage. A total of 150 randomly selected respondents provided primary data, which was analyzed using descriptive statistics and ordinal logit regression. The patrons were youthful (38.6years), mostly educated, with 65% being female, and 40% belonging to less than 4 member-households. Food labels were unimportant to 17% of the respondents whereas 17% were knowledgeable about food labelling. Only 11.3% of the respondents are very intentional in their use of food labels in making decisions. About 68.2% of respondents don't check allergen information on labels, 60% lack knowledge about food regulatory bodies in Nigeria, and 22% find food label quality irrelevant to purchasing behavior. Determinants of consumers’ level of understanding include: (+) educational status, product health claims, health knowledge, consumer’s health status, (-) language/terminology, label orientation, and gender (p < 0.05). The study reveals that consumers' awareness and usage of food labels in Kwara State are significantly low due to language complexity, time factor, and language barriers. We recommend manufacturers and regulatory agencies to develop standardized, legible labels and focus on local language labeling for better inclusion.

Gender gaps in agro-based income generating enterprises among rural households in Ogun state, Nigeria
(Faculty of Agriculture, South Valley University, Egypt, 2024-04-28) Kayode, A.O.; S.A. Adebayo; M.F. Salami; S.T. Odeleye
Men and women both make substantial contributions in agro-based income generating enterprises to augment their household income. This study analysed participation rate in on-farm and off-farm activities on a gender basis in Ogun state, Nigeria. Specifically, the study described the socio-economic characteristics of the respondents, ascertained the level of participation of male and females in agro-based income-generating enterprises; examined factors influencing participation in agro-based income-generating enterprises and identified the constraints to participation in agro-based income generating enterprises between the genders. A three-stage random sampling procedure was used to select 132 respondents (87 males, 45 females) Data were collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics (Regression and T-test) Results showed farm size of the male was 2.7 ectares with a mean monthly income of N40,000 while the females had 1.6 hectares and N49,4000. Males and females recorded high-levels of participation in agro-based activities with a high mean score of 2.67 and 2.68 respectively. Lack of education and training was a major constraint among male respondents (MS=4.38) while discrimination based on gender, (MS=4.04) constrained the females. The result revealed that years of education (t = 0.822, P<.05) and years of experience in the agro-based enterprise (t = -0.027, P<0.05) had positively significant the study concluded by determining the level of participation and factors that influence participation in based agro-based income generating activities. It is thus recommended that policies fostering participation in agro-based enterprises with improved access to land and resources, regardless of gender, be inclusive. of gender, be inclusive.
