    DETERMINATION OF STATURE FROM CEPHALIC INDICES AMONG OKUN AND EBIRA ETHNIC GROUPS OF KOGI STATE IN NIGERIA.

    Cephalic index is an important feature that characterizes different races. The study aimed at comparing the cephalic indices between the two genders and to determine the stature among Okun and Ebira ethnic groups in Nigeria. The subjects were measured for cephalic length, breadth and subject height and the cephalic indices were calculated by dividing the cephalic breadth by cephalic length, and then multiply by 100. 844 subjects of Okun and Ebira origin of Kogi state were measured, 211 males and 211 femalesfor each tribe were measured. Fischer’s formula was used to determine the sample size because the population size is > 10,000. The cephalic breadth and length was measured using a spreading caliper and the subject height was measured with a stadiometer. The data was analyzed using Pearson’s Chi square analysis test for association, trends and distribution difference of the pattern (confidence level at 95%). The mean cephalic indices of both Okun and Ebira ethnic group were >75 and >70 which belongs to mesocephalic and doliocephalic group respectively. There were significant differences in cephalic indices between both ethnic groups (p<0.001). There was no significant difference in cephalic indices between males and females of each ethnic group. Stature was better predicted from cephalic indices for Ebira males (r= 0.386) when compared to the Ebira females (r= 0.127), Okun males (r= 0.296) and Okun females (r = 0.268). All predictions were significant except for Ebira females

    RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LIP PRINT AND SEASON OF BIRTH AMONG A NIGERIAN POPULATION

    Some factors have been found to influence lip print patterns in individuals. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between lip print pattern and season of birth in a Nigerian population. A total 764 adults were purposively selected from a two closely related tribe in the north central geopolitical zone of Nigeria. There lip prints were obtained by applying lip gloss and print on a glass slide. Each lip was divided into 6 quadrants and studied under magnifying lens. Lip print patterns were grouped using Hassan Fahmy (1977) classification. Statistical analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 23). Lip print types were expressed as frequency and proportion for each lip quadrant. Correlations between male and female lip print pattern and their season of birth was done using Chi-square test. The confidence level was set as 95% while statistical significance was set at . Results showed a consistent prevalence of type III and IV in the entire upper and lower quadrant, while the least expressed were type I' and II. Qualitative analysis of association between season of birth and lip print pattern showed no significant distributional difference between those born during wet and dry season in the entire upper and lower quadrant but established that types III and IV were more prevalence in the tribe of study. These finding has provided further fact to prove that cheiloscopy is a reliable tool for personal or tribe identification.

    Relationship between Second Digit Length, Fourth Digit Length and Ratio (2D:4D) and Selected Sport Groups in Ilorin Metropolis

    This study aimed at determining the anthropometric measurements of the It was carried out by measuring the digit length of 350 volunteers consisting of 175 males and 175 female hand-sports participants (i.e. Basketball, Volleyball, Table tennis, Lawn tennis and Badminton) non-hand sport participants(i.e. Football, Athletics, Aerobics and Martial arts) and non-sport participants within the ages of 18 to 65 years. Standard measurement processes were observed to obtain accurate digit length using the Digital Vernier Caliper. The data obtained was analyzed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS Version 23, Armonk, USA).The results showed that digit ratio is an effective tool for distinguishing male sport participants from non-participants but it is not as effective for the female participants. It also showed that notable differences exist between the individuals that participate in hand-related sports and those who participate in other sports generally. The findings of this study suggest that second and fourth digit lengths and ratios can be adapted as sufficient markers for ascertaining an individual's sporting tendencies for various sport types.

    The Effects of Green Tea on the Body Weight and Histoarchitecture of the Testis of Adult Male Sprague dawley Rats

    Background and Aim: Green tea is an aromatic beverage derived from the cured leaves of Camellia sinensis. It is a potent herb which serves various therapeutic purposes. This study was carried out to determine the effect of the administration of various concentration of green tea extract (GTE) on the histoarchitecture of the testis of Sprague dawley adult male rat. Methods: 20 animals were divided into four groups, comprising of 5 animals each. The control group was given distilled water while the treated groups were given 2ml/kg, 4ml/kg and 6ml/kg of aqueous extract of green tea respectively for 26 days. At the end of the admin istration on the 27th day, in accordance with IACUC regulation, the animals were euthanized following the administration of AGTE after which they were dissected and the testes were excised for tissue processing. Results: There was a progressive decrease in weight of the treated animals corresponding to the increase in the concentration of green tea. The histo logical analysis showed that the GTE at 2ml/kg did not disrupt the histoarchitecture of the testicular tissue; however, there was mild to moderate degeneration at 4ml/kg and 6ml/kg respectively and this histoarchitectural distortions of the testis by of GTE may take a direct or indirect path; thus, may induce testicular dysfunction. The Feulgen stain intensity was more in the control and group 1, when compared to group 2 and 3, which is a pointer to DNA ma terial loss in testicular tissues at higher doses. Conclusion: Lower dose of GTE may seem beneficial; however higher doses pose more harm in a short period, when compared to the benefit of the lower dose on the body and testicular tissue. However, there is the need for further investigation on the role and mechanism of action of GTE on testicular cellular and tissue dysfunction and consequence on reproduction.
