Item Interrogating the sustainability of Nigerian television management structure in a digital broadcasting environment(Department of Mass Communication, University of Maiduguri, 0002) La'aro, O.A.; Majeed, I; Adisa, R.M.The paper examines the bureaucratic-based structural and operational arrangement of the NTA in the context of the digitization requirements. The main objective is to explore the perspectives of the former and present staff of NTA as regards the sustainability of the bureaucratic orientation of the NTA management structure in a digital media environment. The theoretical perspective that guides this paper is the bureaucratic and technological determinism theories. The study adopted qualitative research method, with in-depth interviews as means of data collection with snowballing sampling approach which reached saturation with sixteen participants, comprising retired and serving NTA staff in Lagos, Abuja and Ilorin. The paper discovered that NTA is still using the bureaucratic structure even though it is digitizing its operational arrangement. It discovered that the structure of NTA did not anticipate modular nature of digitization because the law governing NTA is obsolete. The paper concludes that the present management structure which was fashioned in the pre digital environment NTA and heavily bureaucratic, and is government control could be antithetical to the workings of digital broadcasting. Majority of the respondents recommends restructuring of the current management structure in line with digital media environment that must encourage viewership through the involvement of social media, youths and timeliness in news broadcast Also that NTA as a content provider needs to redefine its existence by moving from partial commercialization to full commercial venture as a response to emerging trend through conversion of her outpost stations to profitable government ventures.Item Journalists' Attitudes Toward their Work Environment: A Study of Three Broadcast Houses in Ilorin, Kwara State(AKSU Journal of Communication Research (AJCR), 2017-08) Udende, Patrick; La'aro, O.A.We undertook a study aimed at examining broadcast journalists’ attitudes towards their job and why such attitudes exist. The study adopts two research methods namely quantitative (survey) and qualitative (in-depth interview) to collect data from forty-five working journalists in three broadcast houses: Ray Power FM, Ilorin, Radio Kwara, Ilorin and Radio Nigeria, Idofian all in Kwara State, Nigeria; as respondents. Findings indicate that broadcast journalists have positive (67%) attitudes to work. Such attitudes are, however, encumbered by some of the unfavourable media working conditions specifically poor remuneration, harassment and denial of access to news sources. These encumbrances, particularly the poor remuneration; undermine journalists’ ability to adhere to ethics of journalism. Furthermore, findings show that broadcast journalists‟ attitudes are a function of risks associated with the profession. This study recommends among other things, improvement in the general working conditions of broadcast journalists for enhanced productivity. It also recommends the need for broadcast journalists to uphold journalistic values which are the compass for professional conduct.
