    Application of Cloud Computing to Academic Library Services in Kwara State

    Purpose: This study examines the application of cloud computing to academic library services in Kwara state. Method: The population of the study includes library staff of the University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Kwara state university, Malate and Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara State. Meanwhile, the University of Ilorin has a population of 57, Kwara state university 24, and Landmark University, Omu-Aran has 19 given 100 library staff. The research design adopted was a descriptive survey. The total enumerative sampling technique was adopted for the limited population. A researcher-designed questionnaire was used for data collection and descriptive statistic of table count and frequency was used as data analysis. Findings: The study found out that infrastructure as a service, software as a service, and recovery as a service is the type of cloud models adopted by academic libraries in Kwara state The finding of the study also indicated that google cloud, Alexandria, Duraspace, OCLC are the major vendors of cloud computing. It was also revealed that cloud computing applications to various library services like document download service; document sharing; digital preservation and scanning, social interaction were all done using the cloud. Conclusion: Finally, findings of the research revealed that cloud management, budget constraints, hardware and software, technical skills required for maintenance, connectivity, and dependency on the cloud are the challenges that are facing cloud computing.

    Assessing Information Needs and Using Library Resources Among Academics at Kwara State Polytechnics

    Aim: This study examined information needs and the use of library resources among academics in Kwara State Polytechnics, Ilorin. Method: The study identified four (4) research questions. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. The population includes the academic staff of Kwara State Polytechnics, Ilorin with a population of 742. However, the Raosoft sample size calculator was used to get the sample size of 254 for the study. A web-based questionnaire was designed using Google form and generated link was shared among academic staff of the polytechnics. The link was shared on various groups of the academic staff of Kwara State Polytechnics via WhatsApp and Telegram groups. The questionnaire link was shared and responses were collected for two weeks. The total response from the survey is 158 and that was the unit of analysis for the study. The responses collected were automatically analyzed by Google Forms. Findings: The study found that printed textbooks, hard copy journal materials, newspapers, databases, and library catalogs are the sources of information to lecturers in Kwara State Polytechnics, Ilorin. It was found out that academic and research, information on self-development, personal health information, current affair, and information on the new trend are information needs of lecturers in Kwara State Polytechnics, Ilorin and the study also revealed that newspaper, e-book, e-journal, internet, and printed journal are the information demand and use by lecturers in Kwara State Polytechnics Ilorin.

    Entrepreneur Skills as Determinants to Job Opportunities Among LIS Postgraduate Students in University Of Ilorin

    Entrepreneurial skills equip students with abilities that increase their employment potential and include: the abilities to solve problems, to develop social interaction, abilities to find information and to handle it for decision making, planning, communication and presentation skills. This study examined entrepreneur skills as determinants to job opportunities among LIS postgraduate students in university of Ilorin. Four objectives with one hypothesis were identified to guide the study. The target population include postgraduates students of LIS in university of Ilorin both Master and PhD students with population of 101 students (PG coordinator, 2021) There was no sample and sampling techniques as the population was not large enough for sampling as such the study adopted a purposive sampling technique with 16 item questionnaire was the instrument designed and used for the study. The study uses simple percentage, table and frequency as methods of data analysis. However, the null hypothesis for the study was tested with Pearson’s product moment correlation (PPMC). The study found out that communication skills, technological/technical skills, marketing/saleable skills, management skills and financial risk skills as entrepreneurship skills on job opportunities. The study also found out that inadequate funding, poor infrastructural support, poor policy formulation, fear of failing and lack of willingness to take risk as challenges associated with entrepreneurship skills on job opportunities. However, the study recommends that Government should formulate policies that would help LIS postgraduate on entrepreneurship skills and access to credits should be given priority by government to LIS postgraduate students in university of Ilorin

    Influence of smartphone usage on academic performance of students in the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria

    Abstract The study investigated the influence of smartphone usage on academic performance students in the five departments of the Faculty of Information and Communication Sciences, University of Ilorin, Nigeria. The study was guided by five research objectives and descriptive survey design using questionnaire for data collection. Through convenient sampling techniqes to select 315 respondents for inclusion in the study. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22 was used to analysed the data collected with descriptive statistics. Results from the data collected revealed that a majority the respondents were femaless while 60.1% were in the age range of 20-24; that 68.4%of the respondents used Techno smartphone, 88.4% of the respondents agreed that the use of smartphone enhanced academic performance, 76.4% of the respondents indicated that smartphone usage lead to fatigue and sleeplessness, though 80.1% of the respondents agreed that change in the attitudinal behaviour is the solution to the problem of use of smartphone among students. Finally the study recommended among others that the university authority should address the issue of inadequate power supply on campus and monitor the use of smartphones for enhanced academic performance among students in the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, University of Ilorin. .Keywords: Academic performance, Communication and information science, Library and information science, Perceived influence of smartphone, Smartphones and academic performance, Students, University of Ilorin, Nigeria

    The Impacts of Public Libraries in Promoting Knowledge Society among Civil Servants in Nigeria

    Public libraries serve as gateways to knowledge and culture by playing a fundamental role in society. The aim of this study is to examine the impacts of public libraries on the promotion of knowledge societies among civil servants in Oyo State, Nigeria. The total population was 570, and the sample size was 235 using a simple random sampling technique. The research design adopted was a descriptive survey. A questionnaire was used as an instrument for data collection, and a descriptive data analysis technique of frequency and the simple percentage was used. Findings revealed, firstly, that public libraries promote knowledge societies among civil servants through their collections, resources, and internet facilities to enhance the civil service culture. Secondly, public libraries have contributed significantly to improving and promoting knowledge societies as the civil servants make judicious use of the library facility to promote knowledge societies. Thirdly, public libraries have limitation that hindered the promotion of knowledge societies among civil servants; which are inadequate library materials, poor reading culture, inaccessibility to information resources, poor dissemination of information, and inadequate professional staff have. The recommendations of this study are the public libraries should provide more collections, adequate information resources tailored toward the promotion of knowledge societies, recruit professional staff and conduct regular training to improve their discharge of duties to meet the information needs of civil servants for the promotion of knowledge societies.

    Utilization of Electronic Surveillance System in Curbing Theft and Mutilation of Library Resources at Kwara State University, Malete, Nigeria

    This study investigated the utilization of an electronic surveillance system in curbing theft and mutilation in Kwara State University, Malete, Nigeria. Method: The population of the study comprises the librarians and para-librarians of the Kwara State University Library, Malete. The study adopted mixed methods approach, where interviews and a set of questionnaires were used to collect data for the study. The study adopted the total enumeration method otherwise known as census as a sampling technique.Findings: The study found out that the majority of the librarians revealed that electronic surveillance has been very effective in curbing theft and mutilation of information resources in the library. The study also found out that electronic surveillance reduces theft, the consciousness of being monitored in the library, preservation, and protection of library collection, and loss of library materials are the benefits of electronic surveillance in curbing theft and mutilation. Conclusion: Electronic surveillance is one of the mechanisms that is used by the library to deter the theft and mutilation of information materials. The study concluded that Kwara state university library is using anti-theft surveillance and they would start using CCTV surveillance as soon as they move to the newly built library.
