LIBRARIANS’ AWARENESS OF INFORMATION ETHICS IN SERVICE DELIVERY IN PRIVATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES IN OSUN STATE, NIGERIA
(Faculty of Arts, Lead City University, Ibadan, 2022) JACOB, P.A.; OGUNJIMI, T.; ALIYU, A.
Information evolution with advancement in information technological tools has increased the risk of librarians upholding the professional code of ethics. The present study aims at ascertaining the level of librarians’ awareness of ethics of information for service delivery and identifying the ethical issues in information service delivery among librarians in private Universities, specifically, Osun State. The study adopted a survey design while questionnaire was administered to 81 librarians in the 15 private universities. Data was analyzed using frequency distribution. The study revealed increasing consciousness of professionals on intellectual property rights, information accuracy, confidentiality, and privacy, as ethics of information to be ensured when delivering services. However, challenges such as equity in access to and use of information, issues of copyright, plagiarism, and providing accurate information were identified to impede effective information service delivery. Thus, increasing awareness on the need for librarians to be guided by information ethics, through training and local policies is recommended.
