Item Afrocentric Social Thought: Rethinking Sociology in Africa(College Press. Lead city university, Ibadan, 2019) Issah Moshood; Ali A. AbdullahiItem Alcoholism and Alcohol Use: Promoting Social Deviance(Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Federal University of Dutse, 2017-09) Amali Sadiq Ewaoda; Issah Moshood; Suleiman Muhammad; Ado Umar LaluAlcohol, a substance which is produced from the process of fermentation, should be consumed in minimal quantity as it is capable of intoxicating a consumer if taken in large quantities. To this effect, manufacturers have openly laid emphasis against the excessive consumption of the substance. The problem of excessive consumption of alcohol persists as there is a considerable growth of alcohol industries across the globe. In spite of significant public enlightenment against excessive alcohol use, consumers have abused the substance, thereby having a negative health effect on consumers and also leading to divergent social deviances among other social problems. In view of the above, alcohol use is seen to be a reason for the occurrence and re-occurrence of social deviance amongst its patrons. Among such social deviances include driving under the influence of alcohol, which can cause fatal automobile accidents, wife battery, fights and rape, among other deviances. With the anticipated health consequences of excessive consumption of alcohol, medical practitioners have advised against its excessive consumption as it is responsible for ailments such as anemia, liver cirrhosis, cardiovascular diseases such as blood clots, which may lead to heart attack or stroke and an increase in the risk of cancer. Even at that, consumption of alcohol remains high across the globe. With an exploration of academic literature on alcohol usage, this paper argues that excessive alcohol use is likely to increase social deviance amongst its consumers. Thus, the specific prominence of this paper is to objectively probe the negative consequences of excessive alcohol use and to establish its relationship with social deviance. An exploration of existing literature also reveals a Relationship between alcohol and social deviance. The paper also analyzed the consequences of excessive alcohol use, particularly focusing on the occurrence of social deviance amongst its consumers. In view of this, the paper begins with a background of alcohol and alcohol use, a theoretical explanation of the underpinning problem and methodology which was employed by the paper. This paper concludes that excessive alcohol consumption, leads to high prevalence of social deviance such as domestic violence, family instability and other forms of social problems. This paper recommends that alcohol should be taken in minimal quantity as excessive consumption of it leads to social deviance.Item Causes of Intergroup Conflict Between Herdsmen and Farmers in North Central Nigeria(Department of Sociology, Kaduna State University, Kaduna, Nigeria, 2015-07) Babatunde I. Although there are a number of theoretical and empirical studies on the pervasive problem of terrorism in Nigeria, most recent studies have not specifically and adequately examined the possible connection between the components of good governance and terrorism in Nigeria. It is against this backdrop that this paper examined the nexus between the elements of good governance and domestic terrorism in North-eastern Nigeria; thereby injecting new insights into the on-going academic and intellectual discourses on the terrorism in Nigeria. In achieving this, relevant literatures were reviewed and secondary data were sourced. The problem of insurgency was situated within the theoretical framework of Strategic Choice and Political Process. The paper found that the failure of Nigerian government in addressing the problems of youth unemployment, poverty, illiteracy and socio-economic inequality, particularly in the North-eastern Nigeria, provided a fertile ground for the development of religious fundamentalism, which has led to Islamic insurgency in the region. While no society has strict laws governing morality among its members, nevertheless, there are strong moral codes and rules expected of them. Religious doctrines also contain specific injunctions on basic moral principles guiding adherents. Thus, every society has guidelines for the moral conduct of its people. The concern of this paper is the nexus between morality, leadership and governance with a view to setting a template for responsible political leadership in Nigeria. The contemporary Nigerian society has witnessed a steady decline in moral standards over the years. In particular, concern has been expressed on the apparent immoral conducts of the nation’s political actors at all levels. Rather than being an avenue for national development, politics in Nigeria has become a lucrative business venture for different calibers of people. Thus, as a purely business enterprise, only those who have money (money bags) could venture into it for the sole purpose of making more money (profits). The results of this are reflected in decades of under-development, political instability, corruption and infrastructural decay. The paper addresses this vexed issue of morality, leadership and governance in Nigeria. It draws a parallel between moral decadence and bad governance in the country and demonstrated that in several ways, the current political, economic and social travails bedeviling the country are not unconnected with the moral decline among both rulers and the ruled. Consequently, the paper set a template for responsible political leadership in the country through moral rebirth.Item Performance Appraisal in Formal Work Organization(Department of Business Administration, University of Ilorin, Ilorin., 2015) Olatunji Abdulganiy; Issah Moshood; Akor Sunday JosephPerformance appraisal is an important organizational practice required for the effective management of modern work organizations. Due to the importance of entrepreneurial activities in human's life, different scholars in several social sciences and managerial disciplines have looked into the subject from their own disciplinary point of view. Most of these disciplines have only seen the concept from their own immediate academic background with little or no emphasis on the socio-cultural milieu in which entrepreneurship takes place. In an attempt to fill this gap, this paper, exploring various approaches, intends to bring out the importance of socio-cultural factors in entrepreneurship activities. It is observed through different approaches examined in the paper that sociological factors have significant influence on entrepreneurship activities generally. The paper concludes on the premise that sociological factors are important variables to be considered in entrepreneurial studies and in the formulation and implementation of entrepreneurial policies in Nigeria.
