(Published by the Department of Educational Management, University of Ilorin, Ilorin., 2017-01-09) Isiaka, B. A.,; Zakariyau, B.,; Zubair, M. O.,; Ahmed, T. A.
Abstract This study analyzed the social cost of basic school education in Osun State of Nigeria between 2010 and 2017. The study adopted ex-post facto survey research design. The study comprised of all the 1501 basic schools in Osun State. Data were collected with the use of a self-designed checklist titled "Social Cost of Basic Education Checklist" (SCBEC) and were analyzed using percentages. The findings of the study revealed that there was a fluctuating trend of social cost of basic school education in Osun State between the years 2010 and 2017; that less portion of the total allocation to basic schools in Osun State was invested on recurrent social cost (4% to 8%) and showed that capital social cost received huge share of the total allocation into basic school education in Osun State (92%-96%) within the years under reviews. Based on the findings, the study recommended, among others, that the government should consider inflationary trend while planning the total amount to be allocated to basic schools in the state.
