O; Akangbe, T.AThe Nigeria Police as an agent of social control services to the general public and enforces law and order. The Nigeria police occupy various locations especially on the highways where the officers check vehicles and drivers in relation to their duty of prevention and detection of crime. Thus, rather than aiding security and the apprehension of criminals on the highways, police checkpoints in Nigeria have become an avenues for unnecessary delay of motorists and commuters in the quest by the police officers to extort money from them, even as criminals make the best of such scenarios to pay the government that supposed to enforce the law is the same breaking it. It is against this backdrop that this paper explores the factors influencing the exchange of bribery between police and commercial drivers. The study adopts social exchange and rational choice theories and the paper revealed that many commercial drivers were short-changed intimated delayed and extorted and thus recommended that Nigeria Police deserves an improved working condition cultural reorientation and personnel practices to reduce highway extortionItem From Crime reporting to trial and ruling: An investigation into victim’s assessment of the Nigerian criminal justice system.(Department of Criminology and Security Studies, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Nigeria., 2021-06) Salihu, Habeeb Abdulrauf; Isiaka, Monsurat; Balogun, Solomon Obasanjo; Ibrahim, Abdullahi, KayodeThe present study investigates the experiences of victims of crime with the Nigerian criminal justice practitioners from the point of reporting their victimisations to the trial process and court ruling. Many attempts at curbing the activities of the insurgents had proved difficult. This is evidenced in the statement of the former Nigeria Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, that “terrorism and terrorist groups could not be eliminated alone by the Military unless religious bodies and organisations in the country come to the forefront of the spiritual battle”. This statement can be related to the nature of the crisis against conventional war for which the military was trained. Moreover, there are tendencies for the traditional, religious, and economic factors responsible for the problem. These and many other factors have led some affected regions like Borno State to resort to local vigilante. Holding to the argument of Parsons that people do cooperate based on social order, which comes from their values and social actors that is based on voluntarism, this paper examines the effectiveness of local vigilante in combating insurgencies in Nigeria. However, throughout the country, the activities of the local vigilante towards community policing and social order may not be the technically most efficient. Still, their approach is necessary and appropriate in maintaining peace via the indigenous mechanisms of social control that may include African spiritualism. Therefore, the paper recommends a strong synergy between the conventional and nonconventional security organisations for comprehensive crime control and prevention in Nigeria.Item Misuse of Prescription Drugs as Cognitive Enhancement among Iranian University Students: Evidence from an Empirical Investigation(Rangsit University, 2019-12) Habeeb, Abdulrauf Salihu; Isiaka, Monsurat; Ibrahim, Abdullahi, Kayode; Balogun, Solomon ObasanjoMedications prescribed for the treatment of neurological disorders are also used for stimulating alertness and concentration, increasing working memory and improving cognitive performance in healthy individuals. A sample of 1,800 (graduate and undergraduate) students selected from 5 faculties in Allameh Tabataba’i University Tehran completed the questionnaires that included the demographic information and questions related to the research objectives. The findings indicated that the misuse of prescription stimulant drugs is widespread among students and that the need for success (to improved cognitive performance and boost academic grades) predicts the widespread. Thus, the study suggests that adequate public concern and sensitization that will internalize the negative effects of the drugs would be the appropriate intervention that may reduce the demand and misuse of prescription medications among the students.Item The Nigerian Criminal Justice System: A Cursory Look at Salient Issues and Areas of Reform(Faculty of Social Sciences University of Ilorin, 2022-02) Salihu, H.A; Isiaka, Monsurat; Balogun, S. The radical ideology of the group was adopted from the Iranian ideology of Islamization of the entire country. The aim of the Shiites is to oust the existing government in Nigeria and install an Islamic government. This ideology made any existing government in power to wage war against the group. Shiites have been engaging in incessant violent attacks on the security agents in the country while demanding for relevance. In an effort to reduce or stop the menace of the group, the government has been detaining the Shiites leader, El Zakzaky and recently adopted judicial combat with the leader. Holding to the argument of the conflict theory and on the conclusion that the agitation of the Shiites is certainly impossible, the government should adopt civil strategies like inclusive dialogue (with the group through the Muslim Council of Nigeria) and less military efforts to stop the menace of the Shiites. However, this measure must urgently be taken to prevent Shiites from evolving into a more deadly group like the bokoharam, though it is historically traced to Shiites in Nigeria.Item Socio-economic implications of gambling behaviour among Youth in Ilorin metropolis.(Department of Sociology, Benue State University, Makurdi., 2020) Ibrahim, Abdullahi, Kayode; Isiaka, Monsurat; Yusuf, Mohammed Sanusi; Olatunji, Abdulganiyu; Issah, MashoodGambling has become an endemic phenomenon particularly among adolescents and young adults in many societies in recent times.
