There have been arguments on the differences in the academic performance of direct entry (DE) and unified tertiary matriculation examinations (UTME) students of universities. This study examined a comparative study of academic performance of students admitted through the UTME and those admitted via DE into the Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, Nigeria. The design of the study was an ex post facto research design. The population of the study was the entire students in the Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin for 2014/2015 academic session. Purposive and proportionate sampling techniques were used to select 500 respondents used for the study. Students’ Academic Performance Proforma was used to gather students’ grades. Two research questions raised were answered using mean and standard deviation while the hypothesis formulated was tested using the t-test statistical method. The findings of the study showed that there was significant difference in the academic performance of students who were admitted into the University through UTME and DE students. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that the academic performance of students admitted through UTME and DE into the Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin differs as there was an edge in the academic performance of the students admitted through Direct Entry. It was recommended that the National Universities Commission should mandate the Universities in the country to admit into the Faculty of Education only student who have completed their National Certificate in Education
