Item An assessment of predisposing factors of sexually transmitted diseases among secondary schools students in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State.(Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State, Nigeria, 2015) Baba, D. A.; Falaye, K.; Ajadi, M. T.; Ambali, R. O.; Amao, O.The study assessed predisposing factors of sexually transmitted-diseases among secondary schools students in Ilorin metropolis, Kwara State. The population for the study comprises of all the secondary school students within Ilorin metropolis. Descriptive research design of survey method was adopted for the study. A multi stage sampling technique was used to select 200 respondents consisting mainly of secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis. A self designed structured questionnaire which was adequately validated and tested for reliability was used. In all, three (3) research hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The data collected were analysis using chi-square (x²) statistical method. The result of analysis revealed that unprotected sex predisposes secondary school students to sexually transmitted infections in Ilorin metropolis. Lack of adequate knowledge of causes of sexually transmitted diseases also serves as a predisposing factor of the infections among secondary schools students in. Ilorin metropolis. The study recommends that awareness and sensitization programme should be organized in order to educate the young people about sexually transmitted infections especially the secondary school students; government and non-governmental organization should mount campaign against pre-marital sex, unprotected sex and other health risk behaviour among secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis.Item Harmful social cultural practices: An impediment to healthful living in Nigeria.(Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State, Nigeria, 2014) Baba, D. A.; Abikoye, B.; Falaye, K.; Dagwa, M.; Garba, I.This study examined harmful socio-cultural practices as an impediment to healthful living in Nigeria. It x-rayed in detail, the impacts of lifestyle and societal norms and values on people health and well-being. The paper also takes a critical look at impacts of some if the harmful socio-cultural practices on people's health and well being, implications of harmful socio-cultural practices on physical, physiological, mental and social well being of people. It is revealed from the appraisal exercise that harmful socio-cultural practices posed serious problems to health and well being of people in Nigeria. Based on the findings from the review, it is recommended that governments at all levels should mount serious campaigns on sensitizing people on harmful effects of some socio-cultural practices.Item Influence of media enlightenment programmes on control and prevention of cerebrospinal meningitis among people of Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State, Nigeria(The Nigerian Journal of Guidance and Counselling, 2015) Baba, D. A.The study examined the influence of media enlightenment programmes on control and prevention of cerebrospinal meningitis among people of Ilorin metropolis, Kwara State, Nigeria. The study population comprised all the people within Ilorin metropolis, Kwara state. A descriptive research design of survey method was adopted for the study. A multi-stage sampling technique was employed to select two hundred (200) respondents for the study. The instrument used for the study was researchers' structured questionnaire validated by experts in the field of community health and health education. A test re-test method was used establish the reliability of the research instrument and a correlation coefficient of 0.75 was obtained. Three research hypotheses were tested with the use of chi-square (x²) statistical method at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that enlightenment programmes have much influence on control of cerebrospinal meningitis infection among people of Ilorin metropolis, Kwara State. Also, media enlightenment programmes have positive influence on prevention of cerebrospinal meningitis infection among people of Ilorin metropolis, Kwara state. Based on the findings above, the study it was recommended that more programmes on media enlightenment should be organized on effective control of meningitis infections. The population for the study comprises all the people in the study area. A descriptive research design of survey method was used for the study. stratified random sampling technique was used to select 200 respondents that were used for the study. A likert-Scale format questionnaire was used to collect relevant data used for the study. The instrument was validated by the experts and tested for the reliability. A correlation co-efficient of 0.65r was obtained. The instrument was administered by the researcher and research assistants. The data collected was analyzed with the use of chi-square statistical method which was tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The result revealed that, burial ceremonies have many implications on quality of life of people, culture of people we have significant implication on quality of life of people, cost of burial ceremony we have significant implication on quality of life of a deceased family in ilorin metropolis. Based on the findings, the researcher recommends that there is need to change the perception of people as regards burial ceremony in our society, culture of people must be streamlined in accordance with the scriptures in the "Holy book" so as to do away with some beliefs that are not Godly or acceptable in ilorin metro police kwara state.
