Item Luminescence of Cesium Thiocyanate (CsSCN) doped with Eu2+ (CsSCN:Eu2+)(IOSR, 2013) Danja, Bertha Abdu; Njinga, Ngaitad StanislausMany host lattices have been investigated, as it is known that the effect of the host lattice in luminescence is complex, therefore this work seek to investigate Cesium Thiocyanate (CsSCN) as a suitable host lattice in luminescence. Cesium Thiocyanate is doped with EU2+ and the Luminescence of the doped compound measured. CsSCN was prepared from Cd(SCN)2 and Ca(CO)3. The prepared CsSCN was then doped with 0.05% EU2+ at 220oc. The Luminescence spectra of the CsSCN:EU2+ was measured using a D5000-diffractometer. The emission spectra obtained is broad with the maximum at 19801cm-1. The spectra obtained were in agreement with typical thiocynante spectra that were doped with EU2+. CsSCN can therefore be used as a host lattice with some minor problems of decomposition by products.Item Modified Jones reductor for reduction of Eu3+ TO Eu2+ in solution(Scholars Research Library, 2012) Danja, Bertha Abdu; Njinga, Ngaitad StanislausThe possibility of a modified Jones reductor that can be used to reduce Europium (Eu) for the purpose of doping in thermally unstable host lattice in solution was investigated. A modified Jones reductor which can be used to reduce Eu³+ to Eu2+ and doping same into thermally unstable host lattice was constructed. It was then used to reduce Europium in solution. The reduced Europium was analysed by measuring its emission using Fluorolg-3 spectrofluorometer. The constructed Jones reductor consisted of a column (13cm x 2.5cm), a receiver with a neck of about 2.5cm, an adaptor of diameter NS14.5cm and three taps of 2.5cm each for the exits. A solution of prepared Europium salt was passed through the modified Jones reductor to reduce Eu³+ to Eu2+. The result showed that within the limit of error almost 99% reduction was achieved. In conclusion, the modified Jones reductor can be used to reduced Europium and dope it into compounds that are difficult to dope through the melt method.
