Item Analysing the Taboo in Igbo Worldview(Department of Linguistics and Nigerian Languages, University of Ilorin, Nigeria, 2016) Corlet, EweamaThis paper evaluates the taboo phenomenon in lgboland, and the various methods atonement could be efiected whenever offences arc committed. There have been persistent doubts amongst scholars of sociolinguistics, anthropology and Sociology as to what constitutes a taboo in Igboland. The paper offers ample insight to address this sceptism. The research adopted Owerri Municipality (otherwise known as Owerre Nchi lse) lmo State, as its study sample. Owerri Municipality therefore, served as sample frame and a micro yard stick through which the taboo phenomenon in the macro Igbo society was evaluated. The data collection method relied on both written literary works on taboo, as well as oral interviews with two prominent traditional Leaders in Owerri Municipality, In analyzing these data, the stratified mode which identified related literatures and the interviews conducted, were methodically knitted to buttress the argument in this paper, that in Igbo worldview, taboos truly exist and that certain factors give rise to, or constitute what could be classified as taboo. This paper also gave hints that the concept of taboo exists with some variations among some Igbo communities. However, it was also clarified in this paper that these variations in most cases, are insignificant, and therefore, do not affect the efficacy of taboo whether in its Sociolinguistic or cultural forms or its indispensability in Igbo culture worldwide.Item Phonological Variation in Owerri Dialect of Igbo(Department of Linguistics and Languages, Faculty of Arts, Adekunle Ajasin University, 2020) Corlet, EweamaThis paper conducts an inquest into the phonological variation in Owerri dialect of Igbo. The aim is to identify the salient dialectal nuance between Standard igbo and Owerri dialect. The family " tree model was adopted as the theoretical framework for this paper. To guarantee reliability on the information generated from the data. the triangulation technique was used to garner data for the study. The igbo 400 wordlist was equally consulted in addition to reviewing related literatures which sought the views and opinions of other scholars and researchers in related studies. Using . qualitative analysis. the data were analyzed to d~ermine the variation at the phonological level. It also affirmed that distinctions exist between Standard Igbo and Owerri dialect. It is the considered view of this paper that despite the identified phonological variations between Standard igbo and Owerri dialect. comprehension of spoken or written Igbo is by no means impaired or distortedItem Sexism in Igboland(Department of Linguistics and African Languages, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2021) Corlet, EweamaThis study conducted an inquiry into socio-cultural factors which encourage the practice of sexism in Igboland. Sexism as a phenomenon in Igbo society has continued to attract flak, especially from feminists, who equate it with racism. The paper adopted Hillard 's "persuasion theory to confronting sexism" as the theoretical framework. Both primary and secondary sources of data collection were used in this paper. The interview method was adopted in gathering the views of about r respondents between the ages of 50 and above, who are traditional leaders, village heads, an elders in the five Igbo speaking States of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo, which constitute the sampling frame. Their views, that is, data collected from them were analyzed using till inferential data analysis technique. The analysis indicated that the Igbo society is a patriarcha one, where discrimination and inequality against women persist. It was also discovered that wome also contribute to some sexist practices against them because of their "subordinate complex mentality. This paper concludes that sexism is the foundation upon which other oppressions agains humanity are built. The study recommends that feminist activists in Igboland should mount an sustain aggressive public enlightenment programmes to sensitize the public on the ills of sexism.
