    Duties of Professional Counsellors in promoting unity in Nigeria

    In Nigeria, there are issues of insecurity disintegration, lawlessness and heightened corruption among others. The input of professional counsellors cannot be overemphasized especially when ' stakeholders are formulating policies for national integration. Hence, it is on this premise that this study investigated the role of counsellors in promoting Unity in Nigeria. The research design adopted for the study was the descriptive survey type. A multi-stage sampling procedure was adopted in selecting the respondents that participated in the study. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 460 respondents for the study. The instrument used in gathering the required data was a self-developed questionnaire titled Duties of Counsellors in Promoting Unity Questionnaire (DCPUQ). Three null hypotheses were generated and tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance using t-test statistical tool. The result obtained revealed that there was significant difference in the role of counsellors in promoting unity based on gender, educational qualification and length of years in service. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that more school counsellors should enlighten the students on the need for unity and integration among Nigerians. Seminars and workshops should be organized by counsellors in collaboration with the government, Non-Governmental Organizations and other stakeholders in order to discuss and tackle contemporary issues on National integration and unity.     incidence of Emotional Abuse as Expressed by Secondary School Students in Kwara state

    Emotional abuse unlike many other forms of violence is a non-physical attack that is common among school children. Emotional abuse is one that degrades self-worth and interferes with development and productivity of a child. This study therefore investigated incidence of emotional abuse as expressed by secondary school students in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State. The simple random sampling technique was adopted for the selection of 200 respondents that participated in the study. The instrument used for this study was a self-developed questionnaire titled “Incidence of Emotional Abuse Questionnaire " (IEAQ). The instrument possessed a reliability coefficient of 0. 69 after being subjected to the test-r -test procedure The instrument consisted of 15 items which elicited information from the randomly selected respondents. A research question and three null hypotheses were formulated and tested with descriptive and inferential (t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) statistics. The hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance The findings revealed that secondary school students expressed having experienced a lot of emotional abuse such as name-calling, verbal intimidation, isolation, ignoring, and humiliation. Further results indicated that class level, gender and family type did not influence the views of the respondents. It was recommended that school authorities should periodically enlighten the teachers and other school staff members on how to avoid the use of emotional abuse on students. Also, Government and Non-Governmental Organizations should from time to time organize community counselling programmes to sensitize the teachers on the effects of emotional abuse.

    Influence of Guidance and Counselling Services on Students'Career Choice as expressed by Teachers in Saki-east, Oyo state

    It is an issue in Nigerian secondary schools that students hesitate to visit school counsellors at will in making career decisions. Guidance and counselling programmes are used to assist every individual student to become better in all areas of' their lives such as: career decision making, educational. emotional, physical, social, psychological and vocational. This study investigated the influence of Guidance and counselling services on students’ career choice as expressed by teachers in Saki-east, Oyo state. A descriptive survey was adopted for the study. All teachers in Oyo state constituted population for the study while the target population consisted of selected teachers in Saki-East LGA. Oyo state. Simple random sampling technique was employed to select two hundred respondents from the ten public secondary schools that were randomly selected for the study. Three null hypotheses were formulated for the study. “influence of Guidance and counselling services on students' career choice questionnaire " (IGCSSSQ was content validated, with a reliability of 0.70 and administered to the respondents to collect relevant data. Frequency counts and percentages were used for analyzing demographic section while t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistical methods were used in comparing the expressions of respondents on the basis of gender, religion and working years of experience. The findings showed that there were significant differences in the expression of teachers on influence of guidance and counselling services on students’ career choice on the basis of gender, religion and working years of experience. It is therefore recommended that there is need to revamp the career guidance programme in schools especially where there is a significant lack of career information in order to be self-determined in making career decision. Also, Counsellors should sensitize students on the need to acquire adequate vocational information and discuss same freely with their friends they may be able to make well informed careers.

    This study investigated relationship between peer influence and sexual activities of school-going adolescents in Ilorin metropolis, Kwara State, Nigeria. The study determined the relationship between peer pressure and sexual activities of in-school adolescents and moderating variables of gender, educational level and religion. The research is an empirical study which adopted the descriptive survey of correlation type. The purposive sampling technique was used to select 400 respondents that participated in the study while a questionnaire type of instruments titled “Peer Influence and Sexual Activities Questionnaire (PIASAQ)” was used to collect data. Having been subjected to the test re-test method of obtaining the psychometric property, the instrument possessed a reliability coefficient at 0.85, which was adequate. The Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation and t-test statistics were used to analyse the data collect at 0.05 level of significance. The results revealed that there is significant relationship between peer influence and sexual activities of school-going adolescents and respondents were significantly different in the relationship between peer influence and sexual activities based on gender and educational level but similar on the basis of religion. It was recommended among others that guidance counselors and school authorities should identify early enough the various school-going adolescent groups, monitor and give them sex education in order to prevent them from deviant sexual activities such as genital manipulation and watching pornographic movies.

    This study investigated Secondary schools students perception of problems associated with corporal punishment in Ilorin metropolis of Kwara state. The study was carried out using a multi-stage sampling technique. At stage one; the four local governments were purposively selected. Stratified sampling procedure was used at stage two to stratify respondents into desired characteristics of age, gender, religion, class level and school type. At stage three, simple random technique was employed to select 50 students in each of the four local governments making a total of 200 respondents from the four Local Government Area in Ilorin Metropolis. The outcome of this study showed that secondary school students in Ilorin have similar views on the perceived problems associated with corporal punishment on the basis of age, gender ,religion and class level. A significant difference was found on the basis school type. The problems of indiscipline among students cannot be handled by teachers alone as such it was recommended that principals should employ the services of school counsellors. The government should also discourage the use of corporal punishment in School.

    SELF-CONCEPT OF BULLIES IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ILORIN METROPOLIS, KWARA STATE

    Bullying in schools has become an issue of concern across the various segments of the Nigerian society. It is seen as the foundation for much of the youth violence and restiveness currently experienced. This study investigated the general self-concept of secondary school bullies. The study sought answers to four research questions: what is the self-concept of the secondary school bullies in Ilorin metropolis? Will the self-concept of student bullies vary on the basis of their class level, gender and family type? A sample of 175 bullies in six randomly selected secondary schools in Ilorin Metropolis participated in the study. The results of the study revealed that the self-concept of bullies in secondary schools in Ilorin Metropolis was high and also that self-concept of bullies do not significantly differ on the bases of gender, class level and family types. The study recommends that counselors in schools should endeavour to sensitise the entire school communities on the incidence, prevalence and consequences of bullying behaviour and assist bullies in developing healthy self-concept, learn better ways of seeking recognition, status and advancement without harming others.
