Item ANALYSIS OF INDIGENOUS USES AND AVAILABLE PROCESSING TECHNOLOGIES OF PEARL-MILLET AMONG RURAL WOMEN IN JIGAWA STATE, NIGERIA(Faculty of Science, Federal University Dutsin-ma, 2018-09) Bello, Oladele Gafar; Akinyemi, M.; Abdulrahman, O. L; Shuaib, Suleiman; Zanfara, M. I.; Hussaini, AThe study examined the indigenous uses and available processing technologies on pearl-millet among women in Jigawa State, Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique was used to select one hundred and sixty women millet processors for the study. Majority were married (73.1%), Muslims (94.3%) and with no formal education (60.0%). About 96.9% were within the age range of 21-50 years (M=40 years), mean household size and monthly income are 9 persons and N7, 069.18k respectively. About 98.0% sourced labor for millet processing from the family. Funds for business were mostly through borrowing from members of family/relatives (48.8%) and cooperative movement (38.8%). Secondary occupations is either trading (49.4%) or farming (46.9%). Larger percentage (95.0%) of the respondents belongs to one social group or the other. Most available millet processing technologies are soaking/cooking and traditional/bioprocessing (98.1%) while about 41.0% used the thermal improved processing technique. Most uses were; production of Fura, Tuwo, Kunu (98.1%) and closely followed by Ogi, Koko or Akamu (96.9%) among others. Major constraints were; inadequate capital and storage facilities (97.5%). This was followed by nomadic Fulani invasion of farm, lack of improved processing skills, insect pest infestation, processing equipment and extension contact (93.8%).Advocacy (75.6%) on uses of millet is another. Main source of awareness is family/friends/neighbors (88.1%). The study recommended that government should strengthen the extension service delivery by employing more personnel with adequate training to reduce the gap of processors and extension agent contact. Improved variety with good processing value compactable with the socio-cultural background of the respondents should be introduced with current technologies on its processing.Item Perceived Benefits of Neem Trees (Azadirachta Indica) among Youth Farmers in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State, Nigeria(Children and Youth in Agriculture Programme in Nigeria (CYIAP-Network Publishing), 2016-10) Oladipo, Felix O.; Bello, Oladele Gafar; Daudu, A. Kamal; Aliyu, Taiye H.; Agbana, O.; Shuaib, Suleiman; Koloche, I. MDesertification in the Northern part of Nigeria has claimed hundreds of hectares of farmland has been successfully combated in recent years by planting of Neem trees. The study therefore assessed the youths' perceived benefits of Neem trees in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State, Nigeria.Three stage sampling technique was used to collect data from 120 youth Neem farmers and analyzed using frequency counts, percentages ,means ,standard deviation and Charts. The study revealed that majority(74.2%) of the respondents were married, 95.8 % Muslims,with mean age of 30 years, farm size of 4 hectares ,12 years farming experience, monthly income of # 21,904.18 and 23.4 % having formal education. The major source of awareness of Neem tree was through family, friends and neighbours (91.7 %). Major Perceived benefits of Neem tree were firewood and charcoal making (99.2%),making cow haulage transport system (98.3%), cover and shade tree (94.2%), erosion control and burial tool (92.5%). Respondents' indigenous knowledge of Neem tree uses include skin diseases and gastrointestinal infections in ruminants (57.5%), for grains and cowpea storage (92.5%). Constraints on Neem use were lack of subject matter specialists(100%), poor extension contact (97.5%), dosage knowledge (85.8%). In conclusion, Neem tree was however perceived with a wide range of usefulness among the respondents. It is therefore, recommended that extension service delivery in utilization of Neem tree in the state.
