Item THE IMPACT OF EMIR’S MARKET ON SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF ILORIN EMIRATE, NIGERIA(Centre for Ilorin Studies (CILS), University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2017) Olokooba, Issa Nasiru; Abdulsalam, Alliyu Ayodele; Balogun, Idayat NikeSocio-economic development of a community is determined by the size of its market where the needs of people are made available to enhance standards of living through business transaction. As every society needs a market for its economic growth, markets are necessary for the flow of goods and services from the producers to the consumers. Emir’s Market (Oja Oba) in Ilorin is not an exception as its growing strength in both socio-economic affiliation and business transaction is admirable. The commercial activities in Emir’s market make it unique among other markets not only in Ilorin but also in Kwara State. Its impact on socio-economic development of Ilorin, and other communities both inside and outside the state cannot be underrated. This paper thus, examined the origin and development of Emir’s Market, business activities in the market and its impact on the socio-economic development of inhabitants, individuals, group of people and communities in the state. Descriptive research of Qualitative survey was adopted. Primary and secondary sources through oral interview were used to gathering information from men and women who are traders in the market and elderly members in the city. The findings of the study revealed that the market has created financial independence and employment opportunities for inhabitants as skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled workers in the communities around the market. The commercial activities in the market has enhanced the business transaction of the city, improved the status of individuals, groups of individuals and the society at large. Civic Education Teachers’ Instructional Practices Questionnaires were used for the study. All Senior Secondary School Civic Education Teachers constitute the population for the study. 144 Civic Education Teachers purposively drawn, using simple random sampling technique, were selected from 104 Senior Secondary Schools of the three local governments that made Ilorin, that is 19 senior secondary schools from Ilorin-east, 36 from Ilorin-south and 49 from Ilorin-west, were involved in the study; t-test statistical technique was used to analyse data collected. Two Hypotheses were generated and tested in the study at 0.05 alpha level. The results revealed that Instructional Practices of civic education teachers does not significantly differ on the basis of qualification and experience. The study therefore recommended, among others, that civic education teachers should adopt active instructional practices wherein learners will participate fully in the teaching/learning of civic education in order to achieve best teaching practices.Item Social Studies Teachers’ and Students’ Familiarity with and Use of Core Values for the Sustainability of Nation-building(Department of Adult and Primary Education, Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, 2020) Balogun, Idayat Nike; Yayi, Timothy OpeyemiThis study focused on the extent to which both teachers and students of Social Studies have familiarized themselves with Nigeria's core values and evaluated the extent of its use for nation building. The population of this study comprised all teachers and students of social studies in tertiary institutions in Ilorin. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire that was developed by the researchers and validated by experts in Social Studies. Mean, percentage and independent t-test statistical tools were used to answer the research questions and hypotheses respectively. The outcome of the study revealed that there are three main Nigerian core values in which the Social Studies teachers and students are more familiar; the familiarity and use levels of core values of teachers and students were high, but the level of use of core values for the sustainability of nation-building by teachers is somewhat higher than that of the students; There was no significant difference in the familiarity and use levels of teachers and students, but there was a significant difference in the use of core values for the sustainability of nation-building of teachers and students. The study concluded that there is a need for all Social Studies teachers at all levels to deliver every topic related to values in a pragmatic way such that it will reflect the aspirations of sustainable nation-building, this, in turn, will facilitate the practical and utilitarian characteristics of Social Studies objectives towards making identifiable impacts on the societyItem Students' Perception on Teaching Practice Assessment: Implications on Teacher Professional Performance in Nigeria(Anatolian Journal of Education, 2018-10) Balogun, Idayat Nike; Oladele, Jumoke Iyabode; Jamiu, Zainab OmowunmiTeaching practice is paramount in the training of student teachers as a form of exposure into the real world of Teaching. The study examined student teachers' perception on teaching practice assessment and its implications on professional practice. The population of the study was 1,393 university teacher trainees in 400 Level in a Nigerian university with a sample of 150 students using stratified random sampling technique. A researcher designed questionnaire was used for data collection while data collected for this study were analyzed using percentage to answer research questions while the hypotheses were tested using t-test and ANOVA at 0.5 significance level. Findings of this study revealed that teaching practice exercise and Supervisors Assessment had positive impact on student teachers. They differed in their perception on impact of teaching practice based on department but did not on the basis of gender. It was concluded from the findings that student teachers perceived teaching practice experience as being effective considering its positive impact on their professional training. It was therefore recommended among others that student teachers should be supervised by lecturers from departments other than their department in order to reduce familiarity during teaching practice assessment which sometimes affects their scores.Item Teachers’ attitudes towards inclusive educational practices in upper basic schools in Ilorin, Nigeria(Institute of Education, Faculty of Education, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba- Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, 2020-09) Balogun, Idayat Nike; Olokooba, Issa NasiruThis research work explored the attitudes of teachers towards inclusive educational practices in upper basic schools in Ilorin, Nigeria. It adopted a descriptive research design. Eight schools from public and seven from private were selected, using purposive random sampling technique. 200 respondents were selected from selected schools using simple random sampling technique. One research question was answered and three null hypotheses were tested. Data collected through a researcher designed questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that the attitudes of the teachers towards inclusive educational practices was negative. The finding of the study also showed that, years of teaching experience is not a determinant of teachers’ attitude towards inclusive education as there was no significant difference in the attitude of teachers based on years of experience. Finally, it was also discovered that teachers do not have different opinion in their perception on the inclusive educational practices. Based on these findings, it was recommended that students with special needs should be placed in a separate school so that teachers who are trained specifically for students who falls into such category would equip them passionately with necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes that make them responsible and recognisable members of their society.Item TEACHERS’ PERCIEVED CHALLENGES OF USING ICT IN TEACHING SECONDARY SCHOOL SOCIAL SCIENCE SUBJECTS IN ILORIN, NIGERIA(College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Kampala International University, 2017) Olokooba, Issa Nasiru; Okunloye, Rotimi William; Abdulsalam, Alliyu Ayodele; Balogun, Idayat NikeInformation and Communication Technology (ICT) has contributed immensely to human learning and teaching by simplifying difficult concept and enhancing accessibility to contemporary data and developments in human societies in all fields and forms of knowledge, especially social sciences which study human interaction in time and space. However, developing countries such as Nigeria have been experiencing challenges in other sectors that are ICT driven. Therefore, it is necessary to ascertain the nature of this challenges in the school system where it has become a set of tool used by teachers for enhancing learnability of school curriculum and improving academic achievement. Therefore, this study examined the teachers’ perceived challenges of using ICT in teaching secondary school Social Studies Subjects in Ilorin, Nigeria. Specifically, the study identified the teachers’ perceived challenges of ICT use in social science subjects in classroom situations and influence of gender and school proprietorship on the challenges. Descriptive survey research design was employed. Population for this study comprised all social science teachers in Ilorin. The sample for this study comprised 300 respondents through a stratified random sampling technique. A questionnaire titled “Challenges of using ICT in Secondary Schools (CICTSS)” was used. Its reliability was obtained using the test-retest method index of 0.78. Three research questions were raised, a research question was answered using mean and standard deviation while two corresponding hypotheses were tested using t-test statistic. Findings of the study showed that many challenges such as unavailability of computer laboratory, lack of instructional software, the inefficiency of teachers’ technical knowledge, irregular power supply and poor maintenance of computer systems are the constraints in use of ICT facilities by social science teachers. The study also revealed that there is no statistically significant difference between male and female (t=0.29, p>0.05), and private and public social science teachers (t=0.26, p>0.05) on the challenges associated with the use of ICT facilities in schools. Based on these findings, it was recommended among other that regular workshops, seminars, and in-service training should be organised to improve teachers’ efficiency on the usage of ICT.Item Teaching Civic Education to Learners through Best Practices.(Anatolian Journal of Education, 2019-04) Balogun, Idayat Nike; Yusuf, AbdulRaheemThis paper is a deliberate effort aiming at sensitising teachers, students, parents and other stakeholders on the basic objectives of civic education in its introduction into senior secondary school curriculum and the need to obtain full potentials for constructivist theory in teaching and learning of the relatively new subject. The introduction of civic education to Nigerian senior secondary school was directed at cultivating and developing in learners the skills and attitudes to function as relevant citizens of their society. The writer noted that the teaching of civic education in Nigeria is yet to achieve the purpose of which the subject was introduced. Among the objectives of civic education is to highlight the responsibilities of the government to the people and vice-versa and to also cultivate in students of senior secondary school their duties and obligations to the society. Curriculum experts have certain roles to play in integrating standard into curriculum by developing a curriculum framework. Onus of implementing civic education curriculum lies in the efforts and determination of qualified teachers, these categories of teachers are those who has chosen and are convinced that teaching is their calling, and are ready to serve their country in that capacity. The type of teaching expected from these teachers should help the students emerge with an understanding of their country’s history and most cherished values. This is to say that learning experience must allow the students to practically demonstrate what civic education has taught them in any situation.Item UNDERGRADUATES’ AWARENESS OF NIGERIA’S POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS AND THEIR PARTICIPATION IN STUDENT UNIONISM(Social Studies Association of Nigeria, 2017) Balogun, Idayat Nike; Olokooba, Issa Nasiru; Abdulsalam, Alliyu AyodeleThis paper investigates undergraduates’ awareness of political developments in Nigeria and their participation in students’ unionism. To better understand the contemporary roles of political developments in Nigeria and campus unionism, students’ views were sampled from Faculties of Law and Education out of the 15 available faculties. These two faculties were sampled because faculty of law is regarded as a faculty that develops in students rudiment of politics and faculty of education being a mother of all faculties is also expected to develop political skills in students which enhance their political participation, hence need to find out which of the faculty produces students that participate in campus politics better. Simple random sampling technique was used to sample 275 students on the basis of gender. An item of questionnaire titled “Undergraduates’ Awareness of Political Developments and Political Participation” was developed based on the crux of the study. The validity of instrument was ascertained and its reliability was determined using Pearson Product Moment Correlation. Simple Percentage and Chi-Square were employed to test the research questions and the generated hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance respectively. The study revealed among others that undergraduates did not possess adequate knowledge of political developments. It also revealed that faculties were strong and positive prediction of students’ participation in Nigeria; faculty was a strong and positive prediction of students’ participation in campus politics.
