Item Cigarette Smoking Disorders among Adolescent Students in Nigeria Tertiary Institution: Implications for Social Work Practice(Department Of Phsycology, Faculty Of Social Sciences University Of Ilorin, 2021) Atiku Abdullateef Abiodun; Abdulhameed Abdussalam; Sunday Evaristus Abonyi; Titi Olamide Arinde-SimeonAbstract Tobacco intake in form of cigarette smoking is detrimental to human health. It has been estimated that about a third of the world's population, aged 15 years and above, are smokers. Tobacco is made of nicotine substance which is harmful to smokers who indulge in cigarette smoking. Evidence suggests that psychosocial, biological and genetic factors all play a role in nicotine addiction. And it is strongly related to many chronic diseases which includes coronary heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis. In spite of these health risk challenges, adolescents still derive pleasure in smoking tobacco with little or no idea on the consequences of cigarette smoking due to certain factors that militates their interest into cigarette smoking and this includes peer pressure, family background and environmental consequences. This article therefore examined the problems associated with cigarette smoking among students of tertiary institutions in Nigeria; it highlights the health risk of tobacco products and explains the nicotine intake disorders among adolescents. In a bid to foster understanding to this dreadful act, it recommended that, Nigeria government, the civil society organizations, every health professionals and social workers alike should be involved in the struggle to reduce increasing level of tobacco intake through consented effort and control measures.Item ENTRENCHING THE SPIRIT OF UBUNTU IN AFRICA DEMOCRATIC STRUCTURE(Nigerian Army University BIU, 2023) Atiku Abdullateef AbiodunAbstract Ubuntu as a concept of humanism in the African context remains a doctrine that can be practiced by anyone. It is not a philosophy limited to a certain race, gender, or group of people. Ubuntu relates to bonding with others. This is in line with what the word expresses in most African languages as being self because of others. The sayings that, "I am because we are and I am human because I belong" expresses the tenet of ubutun. The Ubuntu doctrine is a concept introduced and adapted into social work practice by the South Africa's social workers, with the aim of reemphasizing the use of huumane methods to achieve human goals as hitherto espoused by social work profession. Most Africa countries democratic structure looks tense and challenging due to inhumane feelings adopted by various leaders upon the lead. Nigeria, being one of the most populous Black Country in Africa and with over 200 million inhabitants while fully endowed with both human and natural resources. Yet, most of her populace still suffers from issues such as insecurity, illiteracy, poverty, unemployment, food insecurity, religious sentiments, multi-ethnic/cultural disparities, and to mention just a few. These are social problems constituted by leadership ineptitude, corruption and inhumane treatment towards one another. This paper examined the ubutun doctrine with the aim of emphasizing on entrenching the spirit of ubuntuism in African democratic structure. With focus on the Nigeria democratic system, while using the ubuntu doctrine as basis for social welfare and political development. However, the implications for social work practitioners are as well stated. The paper recommends that ubuntu doctrine should be introduced into the Nigeria social work curriculum, in a bid to acclimatize Nigerians with the spirit of ubuntu practices.Item FEMALE INMATE MENSTRUAL PHENOMENON IN NIGERIA CORRECTIONAL CENTRES(Depatment of social work, University of ilorin, Benin City, Nigeria, 2021) Atiku Abdullateef Abiodun; Jimoh Buhari EdunAbstract A number of the Nigerian correctional centres are in a state of disarray, placing the female inmates in a disastrous health position. Procuring quality health care services to the inmates is far beyond reach due to serious anomalies operating within the system such as corruption, feeble policies, delay in government programs, ‘Oga’ at the top syndrome, nonchalant attitudes of the officials, and weak criminal justice system among host of other factors. This article cross-examined and explained problems such as menstruation, sexual abuse, congestions and incompatible structures, unhygienic environment and infectious diseases, and other social issues facing female inmates in Nigeria correctional centres. To guarantee sustainable and standard health services to the female inmates in particular, there is need for all hands to be on board to reassess the ongoing crisis on the well-being of the inmates and by aiding uncomplicated approach towards making life meaningful when it comes to health matters of these inmates. Thus, social workers play conspicuous and outstanding roles in administrative and practice positions in correctional centres with the law enforcing bureaus to avert this type of social problem in the society and as well work on the rehabilitation process through a safe and secured social justice system. It therefore, recommends that the Nigeria government and the administration of Nigeria correction centres should key into social Policies by various organizations in promoting health and social welfare of the inmates, In addition is the need for the training of correctional officials on best methods of dealing with inmates of the 21st century and engaging social workers in the Psycho-social and therapeutic interventions.Item HUNGER AND PREVALENCE OF EXTRA-MARITAL AFFAIRS AMONG YOUNG MARRIED FEMALE COUPLES IN ILORIN, NIGERIA(FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES, FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF WUKARI, TARABA STATE, NIGERIA, 2024-12) Atiku Abdullateef Abiodun; Abdullahi Kayode Ibrahim; Afolabi Comfort Yemisi; Sunmola Kazeem Adebayo; Ajayi OluwabukolaAbstract Extra-marital affairs have become common in modern society. Extra-marital affair connotes an immoral act that has brought most families into sudden or prolong distrust, partial separation, and even divorce. With growing economic hardship manifesting in hunger, most married couples tend to justify extra-marital affair as a means of survival. Using the rational choice theory, this paper examines extra-marital affairs among young female couples in Ilorin, Nigeria. Data for the paper emerged through in-depth interviews (IDIs) with eighteen participants. Findings revealed that extra-marital affairs have become pronounced among married young female couples in Ilorin, Nigeria due to hunger and economic hardship in the country. The paper concludes that key determinants of extra-marital affairs among young female couples in Ilorin reside in hunger and economic hardship. The paper recommends that religious clerics, government agencies and policy makers should play critical roles in remodeling the family institution while government at all levels should create enabling environment to improve standards of living for citizens.Item Phenomenon of Elderly Male Couples in llorin Metropolis(Department of Sociology, Al-qalam University, Kastina State, Nigeria, 2021) Atiku Abdullateef Abiodun; Jimoh Buhari Edun; Musa Adamu DanyawoABSTRACT From time immemorial, marriage between husband and wife had been filled with bundles of experiences ranging from love, enthusiasm, lost and melancholie feelings which every couple manage within their home in other to live a fulfilled life, bo compatible and cohabit peacefully with one another amidst several challenges surrounding them. However, the objectives of this study identified the core anomalies confronting elderly male married couples in Ilorin metropolis, it also. states the causes and its health consequences on elderly male couples in a bid to proffer possible solutions via the significance of social workers. The study used a qualitative data collected from 12 elderly man residing in the three geographical locations of llorin metropolis (that is; florin west, East, and South local government areas) through an in-depth interview gulde. The collected data was transcribed and was coded, using Nvivo 12 and was analyzed thematically. Result of the study revealed that elderly men between the ages of 60 and 69 years encounter series of problems ranging from boredom, lack of sexual intimacy, lack of regular communication, jealousy and anger, While among older adults between the ages of 70 years and above suffers problems such as difference in life style/stages, depression, high blood pressure, dementia and the host of other elderly anomalles bedeviling them due to the difficulties experienced from long lifespan marital stay The study discussed the implications of the findings for social work practice and it also proffer recommendations to relevant agencies, family members, the immediate communities and concem aged couples. And more so, policies and programs that will enhance the role of social work practices ol ould be formulated and upheld by the Nigerian governments, through professionalism of social work.
