Item Analysis of risk factors and consequences of sexual dysfunctions: Implication for counselling practice(Department of Social Science Education, Faculty of Education, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, 2022-04) Alwajud-Adewusi, Mariam B.; Odenike, Abibat; Ariyo, Nafisat O.Sexual dysfunction is a major problem besetting the sexual life of couple. It is a disturbance in the sexual desire and responses of married adults. Therefore, this study examined risk factors and consequences of sexual dysfunction among married adults in Ibadan Metropolis, Oyo State. Descriptive survey method was used for the conduct of this study. The population consisted of all married adults in Oyo State while the target population comprised married adults selected from 6 districts in Ibadan Metropolis. Simple random and convenient sampling procedures were used to select 250 respondents that participated in the study. Questionnaire designed by the authors was used to gather data from the consented respondents. Analysis of the data collected was done using descriptive and inferential statistics at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of this study revealed that substance abuse, stress, diabetes, alcohol consumption, sexually transmitted diseases were risk factors of sexual dysfunction among married adults in Ibadan Metropolis. It was also found that constant conflict, depression, anxiety and body pains are some of the consequences of sexual dysfunction. The result also indicated that the gender of respondents had no significant influence on the risk factors as well as consequences of sexual dysfunction while significant differences were noted based on age. It was concluded that married adults should seek the help of counsellors to reduce the trauma associated with sexual dysfunction.Item Analysis of support systems of elderly persons in Lagos state, Nigeria(University Alberta Libraries, University of Alberta, Canada, 2020) Alwajud-Adewusi, Mariam B.The advancement in age could be associated with several changes in the body. These changes might require support systems for elderly persons to function optimally. These support systems are needed to improve well-being and living conditions. This study therefore aimed at investigating support systems of elderly persons in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive survey design and the sample was drawn from selected local government areas in Lagos state, Nigeria based on simple random, proportional and accidental sampling methods. The instrument used for data collection was entitled “Support Systems of Elderly Persons Questionnaire”. The instrument was content validated with reliability coefficients of 0.78. Data was analysed using mean at 2.50 benchmarks and Analysis of Variance at 0.05 alpha level. The findings of the study indicated that support systems of elderly persons comprised mainly children( =3.28) and family ( =3.18) while the form of support are household management ( =3.04) and medical care ( =3.00). There was a significant difference in the support systems of elderly persons in Lagos State, Nigeria based on age. The study therefore recommended that that the people around be exposed to the care needed by the elderly. Elderly persons who are 80 years and above should specially be taken care of.Item Attribution of causes of high-blood pressure among married adults in Ogbomoso, Oyo State(Department of Physical and Health Education, Faculty of Education, University of Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria., 2017-03) Alwajud-Adewusi, Mariam B.; Odebode, Aminat A.; Mustapha, Mulikat Ladi Abdulqadir; Adegboyega, Lateef O.High blood pressure is a health problem with devastating consequences. This study aimed to investigate the attributed causes of high blood pressure among married adults in Ogomoso. The descriptive research design was employed for the study. The simple random and proportionate sampling techniques were employed in selecting samples from selected local government areas. The t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used to analyse the data generated. The hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The results showed that there was o significant difference in the attributed causes of high blood pressure o the basis of gender. However, there were significant differences on the bases of age and educational level. It was recommended that healthy lifestyle habits such as regular exercise, less salt consumption, adequate intake of fruits ad vegetables, reduction of alcohol intake and smoking should be encouraged to reduce the incidence of high blood pressure.Item Cognitive behavioural therapy as a counselling strategy for handling loneliness among elderly persons in Nigeria(Faculty of Technology Education, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, Nigeria, 2021-04) Alwajud-Adewusi, Mariam B.Elderly persons experience psychosocial problems as their age increases. They are prone to psychological and social changes as a result of the weakened immune system, diminished sensory organs, loss of independence and reduced functional ability. The psychosocial problems of depression, anxiety, isolation and loneliness have significant effects on their well-being and quality of life. These conditions could be managed through counselling approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). CBT is effective in reducing the impacts of psychosocial problems in elderly persons. It is a directive, time-limited therapy that could be used to equip elderly persons with skills to modify distorted thoughts and change maladaptive behaviour patterns. This paper, therefore, proposes that CBT be adopted as an effective counselling strategy for handling loneliness among elderly persons based on several empirical pieces of evidence and support. The guidelines, techniques and applications involved in executing the CBT are discussed in the paper.Item Coping strategies of psychosocial challenges facing the aged in Owerri, Nigeria: Implications for counselling practice(Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, 2020) Alwajud-Adewusi, Mariam B.Given that the psychosocial challenges facing the aged are detrimental to their well-being; this study therefore, investigated the psychosocial challenges as well as the coping strategies adopted by the aged in Owerri, Imo State. A qualitative study that employed Focus Group Discussion was used for the study where 24 elderly persons were purposively selected from Imo town. The validity of the structured items was established by experts in the Department of Counsellor Education and the Department of Psychology, University of Ilorin. The sessions were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. The results indicated that depreciation of good health, low mood, financial constraint, loneliness and isolation were the major psychosocial challenges identified by the participants in that community. It was suggested that sensitization campaign should be arranged for the aged in order to ensure healthy living in old age. Counsellors should therefore enlighten the aged to seek for group counselling as it helps to reduce stress and alleviate problems. Aged and elderly are used interchangeably in this study.Item Counselling needs of elderly persons in Imo State, Nigeria(Faculty Pendidikan, University Malaya, Malaysia, 2021-06) Alwajud-Adewusi, Mariam B.The gradual increase in age makes the elderly susceptible to situations which needed to be allayed. This study investigated counselling needs of elderly persons in Imo State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey: simple random, proportional and purposive sampling methods were used to select the study sample. The instrument entitled “Counselling Needs of Elderly Persons Questionnaire” was used to collect data. Validity of the instrument was ensured, reliability was established with a coefficient of 0.73. Data was analysed using mean and Analysis of Variance at 0.05 alpha level. The findings showed that counselling is required for elderly persons while there was no significant difference in their counselling needs based on age and gender. The study recommended that counselling outlet be accessible and well-furnished to cater for the needs of elderly persons.Item Exploring coping strategies of retired elderly persons in Ilorin metropolis, Nigeria: Implication for counselling(University of Zululand, SouthAfrica, 2021) Alwajud-Adewusi, Mariam B.Retirement involves the transition from one stage in life to another. This transition has some implications which require coping strategies to survive the occurrences. This study, therefore, investigated coping strategies of retired elderly persons in Ilorin metropolis, Nigeria. The research design is a descriptive survey. The population of the study comprised elderly persons in Kwara State and the target population consisted of retired elderly persons in selected local government areas in Ilorin Metropolis. 300 retired elderly persons were purposively selected through snowball sampling, with the assistance of the pension office. Questionnaires were used for data collection. The data was analysed using mean and analysis of variance. The results show that retired people adopted the coping strategies of having regular contact with people, spending time in nature (sleeping), performing regular exercise, seeking spiritual comfort, engaging in pleasurable hobbies and receiving support from family. However, there were significant differences in the coping strategies of retired persons in Ilorin Metropolis on the basis of gender, marital status and educational qualifications. The study recommended that male and female retirees should be encouraged to attend retirement counselling regularly, to adjust to the challenges of retirement. This implies that retirement counselling should be arranged for the elderly to ensure better health, emotional stability and physical functioning. This study has provided fresh information regarding coping with retirement that can be used for comparative studies as well as for informing retirement education and management within and outside employment in Nigeria, and perhaps elsewhere.Item INCIDENCE OF CYBERBULLYING AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ILORIN METROPOLIS(Department of Educational Management and Counselling, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2022-06) Mustapha, Mulikat Ladi Abdulqadir; Yusuf, Jamila; Alwajud-Adewusi, Mariam B.; Ibraheem, Maryam TaiyeCyberbullying is on the rise due to adolescents’ access to telecommunication devices. This study therefore investigated incidence of cyberbullying among students in Ilorin metropolis, Nigeria. The study's population included all secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis, with the target population consisting of all students in selected schools across the city's three Local Government Areas. This study enlisted the participation of 400 students. A researcher-designed instrument titled “Incidence of cyberbullying Questionnaire (ICQ) which was validated by experts and has reliability coefficient of 0.79. Percentage was used for demographic data and in answering the two questions raised. Hypotheses formulated were tested using t-test and ANOVA statistical tools at 0.05 level of significance. In terms of perpetration, 34% of the respondents reported threatening other students on frequent basis while 30.3% frequently attacked sexual identity of others. 51.8% of the respondents have witnessed cyberbullying and 49.8% of the respondents have been excluded from online group. The result of hypotheses revealed that inschool adolescents do not differ in the perpetration of cyberbullying across age group, gender, religion, school type and time spent online. However, respondents differ in the perpetration of cyberbullying based on their level of competency in the use of communication devices and social media sites use. In-school adolescents do not differ in their experience of cyberbullying victimization across the tested variables. Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended that school counsellors should design programme to teach skills to secondary school students about responding to potential cyberbullies.Item Influence of parental conflict on behaviour problems of adolescents as expressed by undergraduates of University of Ilorin, Nigeria(Department of Educational Management and Counselling, Faculty of Education, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2021-12) Alwajud-Adewusi, Mariam B.; Umar, Fatima; Odenike, AbibatThe risk of parental conflict on children is usually traumatic and devastating. Therefore, this study aimed at investigating the influence of parental conflict on behaviour problems of adolescents as expressed by undergraduates of university of Ilorin, Nigeria. The descriptive survey research design was employed for this study. The population of this study comprised all undergraduates of university of Ilorin while the target population consisted of students selected from the faculties of Education, Agriculture and Management Sciences. The proportional sampling technique was used to select 250 students from these faculties. The simple random sampling technique was adopted to select the respondents for the study. A questionnaire designed by the researchers was used for the collection of data. The questionnaire was validated by experts in the department of Counsellor Education, Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin. The reliability of the instrument was ascertained. The correlation of the two sets of scores using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation yielded a co-efficient R=0.67. The data collected was analysed using t-test at 0.05 alpha level. The findings indicated that low self-esteem, use of abusive language, lack of concentration in school, loneliness, truancy, bulling and frequent lying are the behaviour problems manifested in adolescents experiencing parental conflict. The findings also indicated that there were no significant differences in the expression of Undergraduates of University of Ilorin, Nigeria on the influence of parental conflict on behaviour problems based on gender and age. This study, therefore, recommended that couples experiencing marital conflict are encouraged to visit counsellors for guidance and to provide effective conflict resolution and management strategies, in order to minimize the consequences on children.Item Perceived causes of infertility among married adults in Kwara State, Nigeria(Faculty of Education, Federal University of Kashere, Gombe, Nigeria, 2021-12) Ariyo, Nafisat O.; Alwajud-Adewusi, Mariam B.; Odenike, Abibat; Gbadamosi, M.O.Infertility is one of the major causes of marital discord with damaging condition that exposes couple to emotional, physical and financial stress. Therefore, this study aimed at investigating the perceived causes of infertility of married adults in Kwara State. The research design adopted for this study is descriptive survey method. The population of this study is all married adults in Kwara State while the target population comprised married adults in the seven selected Local Governments Areas from the three senatorial districts of Kwara State. 420 respondents were selected as the sample for the study. Proportional and simple random sampling techniques were employed by the authors to select the sample for this study. The instrument (questionnaire) used for this study was designed by the authors. Content validity of the instrument was ascertained, and the reliability of the instrument was established using test-retest method. The correlation of the two sets of scores using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation yielded a co-efficient R=0.81. The data collected was analysed using t-test and Analysis of Variance at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that there were no significant differences on the perceived causes of infertility among married adults in Kwara state on the basis of age and gender. This study, therefore, recommended that Modern and assisted methods of conception such as intra-uterine insemination (IUT), Invitro fertilisation and embryo transfer (IVF/ET), gamete intra fallopian transfer (GIFT) should be encouraged by medical personnel and implemented by couples suffering from infertility. Counselling services should be organised regularly for couples to alleviate the impacts of infertility on the well-being of the couple.Item Predisposing factors of domestic violence as expressed by married women in Osogbo, Nigeria(Faculty of Technology Education, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, Nigeria, 2019-07) Alwajud-Adewusi, Mariam B.Domestic violence is a menace that affected the dignity and well-being of women. This study therefore investigated predisposing factors of domestic violence as expressed by married women in osogbo, Nigeria. The research design that was employed for this study was a descriptive survey. The researcher adopted simple random and systematic sampling techniques to select 220 married women that participated in the study. A researcher-developed instrument was employed in the collection of data for this study. The instrument was content validated by experts in the department of Counsellor Education, University of Ilorin and the test-retest reliability was ascertained with a coefficient of 0.80. The data collected was analysed using t-test and Analysis of Variance. The findings showed that lack of adequate marital counselling, husband’s desire to dominate wife, poor communication between couple, low financial income and childlessness are factors that predisposed married women in Osogbo to domestic violence. The findings also revealed that there were no significant differences in the expression of married women in Osogbo based on age and educational qualification. Homosexuality and Pedophilia are not strange sexual behaviour in Nigeria despite the grave punishment attached to it. Though many American and European countries legalise the act and has been pressuring other countries to do the same; Nigeria inclusive. Unusual sexual experience at childhood as been identify as one of the causes of homosexuality and pedophilia. One of the effects of homosexuality and pedophilia is high risk of suicide and can be cure by therapist/counsellors using techniques like aversive. By implication, this paper discusses sexual deviant behaviour and suggests recommendations to curb this abnormal behaviour.
