Item Caregivers' Perception of the Consequences of Breast Cancer in Kwara State, Nigeria: Implications for Health Educators(Department of Education, University of Maiduguri, Nigeria, 2017-09) Odebode, A.A; Adebayo, D.O.,; Alwajud-Adewusi, M.B.; & Okesina, F.A.Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers and the highest leading cause of death among women. This study investigated the caregivers’ perception of the consequences of breast cancer in Kwara State. Differences in the participants’ perception based on duration of care giving and level of education were also examined. This study employed a descriptive survey method. A sample of 100 women, who are caregivers, selected through purposive sampling participated in the participants in the study. A self-designed questionnaire titled Consequence of Breast Cancer Questionnaire, (CBCQ) was used for data collection. The validity of the instrument was done by experts in the Departments of Counsellor Education and Behavioural Science, University of Ilorin, Nigeria. The reliability of the instrument was established using split-half reliability method and correlation coefficients of 0.62 was obtained. The data were analysed using frequency counts, percentages and means and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 alpha level. The findings revealed that caregivers perceived consequences of breast cancer to be depression, chronic pain, emotional distress and death. It was also revealed that there were no significant differences in the participants’ perception of the consequences of breast cancer based on duration of care giving and level of education. Conclusion was drawn that the consequences of breast cancer are devastating therefore, health educators should train caregivers through organization of workshops, on how to handle the consequences of breast cancer, with the aim of helping women with breast cancer cope with the found consequences.Item Causes of Examination Malpractice as Perceived by Teachers of Secondary Schools in Lagos State, Nigeria: Implications for Counselling Practice(Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria, 2017-05) Odebode, A.A.,; Alwajud-Adewusi, M.B.; & Akinyemi, O. B.This study investigated the causes of examination malpractices as perceived by teachers of secondary school in Lagos State. Moderating variables of gender, length of years in service and school type were also examined. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. A total of 600 respondents from three senatorial districts were selected using a three-stage sampling procedure which comprised simple random and purposive sampling techniques. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire titled “Causes of Examination Malpractice Questionnaire (CEMQ)”. The validity of the instrument was established by five experts in the Department of Counselor Education, University of Ilorin, Nigeria while, the reliability was determined using test re-test method and a correlation coefficient of 0.87 was obtained. One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and t-test statistical tools were used to analyze the data and the formulated hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. Result showed that teachers of secondary schools in Lagos State perceived the causes of examination malpractice as societal preferences for certificates, poor self-concept, lack of adequate learning facilities (libraries, laboratories etc) and teachers not considering the slow learners while teaching, among others. The testing of the hypotheses showed that there was a significant difference in the causes of examination malpractice as perceived by teachers of secondary schools in Lagos State based on gender, length of years in service, but there was no significant difference based on subject taught and school type. Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended that Government should place more emphasis on knowledge and skill acquisition and not on certificates, as certificates may not be a true measure of individual’s abilities. Teachers should consider more, students who are slow learners when teaching.Item Effectiveness of Rational -Emotive Behaviour Therapy in Reducing Bullying Behaviour among in-school Adolescents Based on Gender and Age(Department of Science Education, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria, 2016-03) Mustapha, M.L.A; Muhammed, S.A; Alwajud-Adewusi, M.B.Bullying behavior is a deliberate, unprovoked, aggressive behavior displayed repeatedly with the aim of harming or hurting others. It is characterized with imbalance of power (physical/psychological). This study investigated the effectiveness of Rational-Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) in the reduction of in-school adolescents bullying behavior REBT is a theory based on the assumption that human beings are born with the ability of rational thinking and constructive behavior. The theory attributes bullying behavior to the irrational aspects of in-school adolescents belief system formed in childhood. The research design adopted in the study is quasl experimental in nature using 2x2x2 factorial design. It is made up of two(2) row groups (one experimental and one control) and two column groups (age and gender). Instrument used in purposively selecting the participant in the study was Bullying Identification Questionnaire (BIQ). Perpetrators of bullying behavior (i.e bullies only) were identified and participated in the study. REBT treatment procedure packages were administered to participants in the treatment. It was revealed that REBT produced administered to participants in the treatment group. It was revealed that REBT produced significant reduction in the bullying behavior of in-school adolescents, mean difference was observed in the pre and post-test scores of participants in the treatment group. ANCOVA was used to test for significant reduction of bullying behaviour yielding F=85.8, df (1, 47); gender and age had moderating effects on the reduction of bullying behavior of in-school adolescents F (df=1, 47)=34.2; F (df=1, 47)=51.9, p<0.05 respectively. It is recommended that REBT be used in the treatment of bullying behavior of secondary schools students.Item Manifestations of Depression among Undergraduates of Universities in Kwara State, Nigeria: Implications for Counselling(Department of Science Education, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria, 2018-03) Yahaya, L.A.; Adegboyega, L.O.; Alwajud-Adewusi, M.B.; & Aminu, H.P.Depression is a common mental disorder that presents with depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure, decreased energy, feelings or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite and poor concentration. This study was therefore carried out to investigate the manifestations of depression among undergraduates of universities in Kwara State. It also examined the influence of variables of religious affiliation and level of study on undergraduates’ responses. Descriptive survey design was adopted for this study and multi-stage sampling procedure which comprises purposive, proportional, stratified and simple random sampling techniques were adopted to draw a total sample of 600 undergraduate from two universities in Kwara State. “Manifestations of Depression Questionnaire (MDQ)” was used to collect relevant data. The instrument was subjected to test re-test reliability co-efficient which yielded the score of 0.78 and the hypotheses were analysed using t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 significance level. Frequency counts and percentages were used to present the demographic data. The findings of the study identified poor school academic performance, avoidance of responsibility and difficulty in day to day tasks, health problems and loss of self-confidence as major manifestations of depression among undergraduates of universities in Kwara State, Nigeria. The hypotheses tested revealed no significant difference in the manifestations of depression among undergraduates of Universities in Kwara State based on religious affiliation and level of study. In line with the findings of this study, it was recommended among others that members in peer groups should be encouraged to assist one another and encourage prompt report of depression.Item Menopause-Related Problems of Women in Kwara State, Nigeria(Faculty of Education, Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma, Nigeria, 2014-01) Oniye, A.O.; Adegboyega, L.O.; Odebode, A.A.; Alwajud-Adewusi, M.B.Menopause is a profound change in the lives of women as it takes them to the next stage of their non-reproductive life. The main objective of this study is to investigate the menopause-related problems of menopausal women in Kwara State, Nigeria. The researchers thus investigated whether or not there was a significant difference in the menopause-related problems of menopausal women in Kwara State on the bases of age and highest educational attainment. Descriptive survey research procedure was adopted for the study. The Multistage sampling technique was used to draw a sample of 466 respondents. The instrument for data collection was the Menopause-related Problems Questionnaire (MPQ). Research questions was raised while research hypotheses formulated were tested. The data collected were analysed through the use of frequency counts, percentages, t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that there was a significant difference in the menopause-related problems experienced by menopausal women in Kwara State on the bases of age and highest educational attainment. It was therefore recommended among others that in order to bring about meaningful family wellbeing, married people and other stakeholders should be sensitized by marital counselors on the nature of menopause and its related problems through accurate education.
