Item AN OVERVIEW OF INTIMATE PARTNERS’ VIOLENCE:(2019-11) Akangbe, Tomisin Adedunmola; Derby, Nana C; Egharevba, Matthew EThe role and importance of women within any society cannot be overemphasized. Women and girls continue to suffer unequal treatments and they account for 6 out of 10 of the world’s poorest, with up to two thirds of the world’s illiterate population being women. Women perform 66 percent of the world’s work, produce 50 percent of the world’s food but earn only 10 percent of the income and own only 1percent of the property. (UN fast facts, 2014). It is sad that some of the most inhumane treatments experienced by women are at the hands of loved ones, these violent treatments especially by a lover or partner is referred to as intimate partner violence (IPV). The consequences of IPV goes beyond physical injury, it affects the productivity of victims (women)who miss work whilst nursing injuries from IPV episodes, also most victims of IPV fall within the labour force age group and thus are not able to contribute to the economy. The paper ended by concluding that emotional, psychological, physical and mental disruptions experienced as a result of IPV hinders the overall productivity and performance of women in economic activities. The study recommended the need to abolish certain cultural and religious practices that enables IPV and also that cases of IPV should be treated as criminal offences and not mere private matters.Item Criminal victimisation: Conceptual and theoretical perspectives(The Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, 2021-02) Balogun, Obasanjo Solomon; Akangbe, Tomisin Adedunmola; Salihu, Habeeb AbdulraufEvery crime is targeted at someone or something. Criminal victimisation is not just a concept, but a major area of research interest in victimology – a subfield of criminology. Thus, criminologists interested in criminal victimisation beam their searchlight to understanding its extent, pattern, cause, as well as its effect. Hence, this work aims at conceptual and theoretical review of the concept. In achieving the foregoing aim, the study, therefore, relies on secondary sources of data such as published works, journals, textbook, internet-based materials, among others. Based on the theoretical review, it was found that the cause(s) of criminal victimisation is multidimensional, ranging from victim precipitation, lifestyle-exposure risk factors, social disorganisation as found in victimogenic place, absence of capable guardian as espoused by routine activities theory, among others.Item Dynamics of Police extortion on the Nigerian Highways(Ilorin Journal of Sociology., 2018) Ibrahim, Kayode Abdullahi; Isiaka, Monsurat; Salihu, Habeeb Abdulrauf; Balogun, Obasanjo Solomon; Akangbe, Tomisin AdedunmolaThe Nigeria Police as an agent of social control provide social services to the general public and enforces law and order. The Nigeria Police occupy various locations especially on the highways where the officers check vehicles and drivers in relation to their duty of prevention and detection of crime. They often deviate from their constitutional functions by collecting bribes from the motorists especially on the highways with impunity and pretentiousness. Thus, rather than aiding security and the apprehension of criminals on the highways, police checkpoints in Nigeria have become an avenues for unnecessary delay of motorists and commuters in the quest by the police officers to extort money from them, even as criminals make the best of such scenarios to pay the necessary toll and evade apprehension. It has become worrisome that a very arm of the government that supposed to enforce the law is the same breaking it. It is against this backdrop that this paper explores the factors influencing the exchange of bribery between police and commercial drivers. The study adopts social exchange and rational choice theories and the paper revealed that many commercial drivers were short-changed, intimidated, delayed and extorted and thus recommended that Nigeria police deserves an improved working condition cultural reorientation and other personnel practices to reduce highway extortion.Item Entrepreneurship as a strategy for empowering female survivors of intimate partner violence in Lagos State, Nigeria(Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, 2022) Fawole, Olufemi Adeniyi; Balogun, Obasanjo Solomon; Akangbe, Tomisin AdedunmolaEntrepreneurship has become accepted as an imperative means to improve livelihood, boost job creation and ensure economic independence. Economic dependence on their abusers is one of the reasons battered women may not quit abusive relationships, hence the need to have a steady means of sustenance both for themselves and their children. In-depth interview from ten female survivors of Intimate partner violence, were analysed using the content analysis procedure, which was further predicated on the 1988 Gondolf and Fisher Survivor theory. The study revealed that female survivors of IPV were able to cater to their needs through the financial aids received from the State Government and also through their participation in the skill training and acquisition programmes put in place by the State. Entrepreneurship, when embraced can be the solution to this over-reliance of women on their abusive partners. This paper looks at the role entrepreneurship can play in empowering women especially those who suffer economic abuse in intimate relationships.Item Entrepreneurship as a strategy for empowering female survivors of Intimate Partner Violence in Lagos State, Nigeria(Published by the Ife centre for Psychological Studies, Ile-Ife., 2022-12) Akangbe, Tomisin Adedunmola; Fawole, Olufemi Adeniyi; Balogun, Obasanjo SolomonEntrepreneurship has become accepted as an imperative means to improve livelihood, boost job creation and ensure economic independence. The real control however often flows through the informal hierarchies shaped by inmate leaders. The paper examines how leadership dynamics among inmates within Oke-kura correctional centre, Ilorin, Kwara State, affects both individual outcomes (recidivism, training engagements) and collective outcomes (safety, cohesion etc). It also investigated the criteria used in the selection of inmate leaders and identified the leadership structure among the inmates. The study relied on a qualitative research method of data gathering and thematic and content analysis. A total of 21 KII and IDIs was conducted among inmates serving sentenced terms of more than 7 years. Findings indicated that inmates’ subculture and leadership hierarchy exists within Oke-kura prison. The study identified the following positions: Inspector general, Commissioner, Provost, Chief justice, Welfare and religious leader. Criteria for selection included inmate literacy level, language diversity, level of loyalty to the prison wardens, relationship with other inmates and general good behavior. The paper concludes that although leaders among inmates can coordinate and manage their cell mates; serve as a rehabilitation tool and as eyes and ears for officers in their absence, leaders can also serve as a hindrance to inmates’ rehabilitation, indicating a dual impact. Hence the paper recommends the employment more officers in correctional centres in order to avoid over-reliance on inmate leaders; also correctional centres should adopt non-custodian sentencing such as fines and community service to reduce congestion of centres.Item Influence of Intimate Partner Violence Experience in family of Origin on Family of Destination in Sokoto State, Nigeria(Madonna University, Okija, Nigeria, 2016-08) Fawole, Olufemi Adeniyi; Akangbe, Tomisin Adedunmola; Durowaiye, BabatundeThis study investigates influence of intimate partner violence in the family of origin on the family of destination with particular reference to Sokoto State, Nigeria. Questionnaires were administered to 255 married women selected from the North Local Government were selected out of which 175 claimed they had experienced intimate partner violence. The study also interviewed 7 married men who had witnessed some form of intimate partner violence in their home of origin. Data was analyzed using regression analysis in SPSS. This study found that incidence of domestic violence affect marital stability in the study area (p < 0.05), and individual type of marriage will contribute to incidence of domestic violence (p < 0.05). However, the study found no connection between individual level of education and participation in domestic violence (p > 0.05) in Sokoto North local government area. Therefore, this study proffers solutions towards eradication of domestic violence as a way of promoting women development, marital stability and reducing gender disparity in the Nigeria society. It was recommended that cultural assumptions that women should be physically abused, perception of women as weaker and needing to be controlled, as well as proper socialization of the children, especially the male child should be increased, thereby reducing the vulnerability of women to intimate partner violence.Item Kidnapping for Ransom:(FUOYE Journal of Criminology and Security Studies, 2026-01) Akangbe, Tomisin AdedunmolaKidnapping for ransom has become one of the most prevalent and economically harmful security issues in Nigeria. What started as a politically influenced kidnapping at the beginning of the 2000s has become a nationwide criminal enterprise. This paper’s objectives were to examine the historical development, causal factors, and trends of kidnapping across all six geopolitical regions, as well as governmental interventions. The study adopted a semi-systematic review of empirical evidence, theoretical framework, and recent developments up to 2026. Using Routine Activity Theory, Strain Theory, Social Disorganization Theory, and Political Economy perspectives, the study argues that kidnapping-for-ransom is both a product and driver of broader governance and development failures. Findings revealed that a combination of socio-economic forces, such as poverty, unemployment, inequality, and ineffective capacity to enforce the law, corruption, insurgency, banditry, and proliferation of small arms has heightened the menace of kidnapping. Currently, there is a significant drift towards ransom payments through Nigerian banks and fintech platforms, indicating more penetration of formal financial systems. In addition, regional analysis revealed mass kidnappings in Northeast instigated by the insurgent, banditry associated with kidnappings in Northwest, highway kidnappings in North Central area, and organised criminal networks in the South East, South South, and South West. The paper concludes that government action measures such as military, anti-kidnapping laws, community vigilante groups, and financial control regulation have not produced much success in the long term because of structural problems and the uneven application of adopted measures. The paper recommends a holistic, multi-layered measure that would combine enhanced law enforcement capability, socio-economic reforms, improvements in cyber and financial intelligence, community engagement, and regional cooperationItem Meaning, Nature and Scope of Criminology(Faculty of Social Sciences. University of Ilorin, 2021-12) Ibrahim, Kayode Abdullahi; Akangbe, Tomisin AdedunmolaItem TOURISM GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT IN THE FACE OF ETHNO RELIGIOUS CRISES:(BERJAYA Journal of Services & Management, 2025-01) Lawal, Musediq Olufemi; Balogun, Obasanjo Solomon; Salihu, Habeeb Abdulrauf; Ibrahim, Abdullahi Kayode; Akangbe, Tomisin AdedunmolaThis paper examined the effects of ethno-religious crisis and insecurity on tourism growth and development, something hardly researched on thus far. The study was specifically carried out in Jos Metropolis, capital of Plateau State, Nigeria. Both quantitative and qualitative research designs were used, involving 225 respondents. The paper explored available tourism resources and facilities; people’s experience with ethno-religious crises; tourism situation before, during, and after the crises; and consequences of the crises on tourism growth and development. The results showed a significant drop in tourists’ patronage in Jos, loss of skilled labour, and destruction of recreational amenities. A high rate of unemployment, low economic returns, and a lack of interpersonal relationships due to mistrust among the populace were equally noted. This study thus calls for adoption of proactive steps for reducing, if not getting rid of, the crises for growing tourism and hospitality as a vital service sector to achieving sustainable livelihoods and economic growth in Jos Metropolis, Plateau State, and the country of Nigeria, itself.Item Work Stress and Coping Strategies among Staff of University of Ilorin Health Service Unit, Ilorin, Nigeria:(Sub-Saharan African Journal of Psychology and contemporary issues, 2026-03-31) Atiku, Abdullateef Abiodun; Akangbe, Tomisin Adedunmola; Ajayi, OlubukolaWork stress occurs in all professions and work settings, including healthcare centre’s where doctors, nurses, pharmacist, administrative personnel’s and allied workers operate.
