    HOME BACKGROUND AND SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN ISLAMIC STUDIES IN OYO NORTH, NIGERIA

    The role played by home as an agent of civilization could not be overemphasized. Home is a determining factor in any child’s behaviour and thus influences his academic performance. Hence, this study examined home background and secondary school students’ academic performance in Islamic Studies in Oyo North, Nigeria. The study was a descriptive research of a survey type, stratified sampling technique was used to select 500 respondents. A researcher-designed questionnaire and Performance Test were used to elicit information from the respondents. Mean, standard deviation and chi-square were used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that there was a significant influence of home background on secondary school students’ academic performance in Islamic studies; there was a significant effect of parents’ level of education on secondary school students’ academic performance; there was a significant effect of parents’ level of occupation on secondary school students’ academic performance; there was a significant influence of parental care and commitment on secondary school students’ academic performance; it was concluded that home status, parental educational background, parents’ occupation, school type, home supports for children’s education, parental care and commitment have a significant influence on secondary school students’ academic performance. It was recommended that parents and guardians should endeavour to play their parental roles to ensure good upbringing of their children. Islamic Studies teachers should take cognizance of the various backgrounds of their students in the classroom thereby employing methods and techniques of teaching that would cater for those background differences

    Importance of Female Education in Nation Building: The Islamic Perspectives

    Female education is one of the critical issues that had been relegated to the background in most of our communities. In fact, there is insinuation that Islam discourages female education. Thus, the aim of this paper was to refute the above insinuation and bring to a limelight, the importance of female education in nation building from Islamic perspective. In doing so, Analytical method was employed. The researchers relied on printed and electronic materials. It was revealed that education is a light for all human beings- male and female and from Islamic perspectives, what is good men is generally good for women as well. The paper posited that female need to be educated as they also have their roles to play in national development. It was however, recommended that female education should be encouraged and promoted most especially among the Muslims. The erroneous belief held by some Muslims that Islam disallows female education should be discarded

    Teachers’ attitude towards moral development of basic school pupils in Ilorin South Local Government Area, Kwara State, Nigeria

    The main focus of this research was to investigate the Attitudes of Teachers in Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara state towards moral development of Basic school pupils. Specifically, the study sought to determine theattitude of teachers towardsmoral development of Basic school pupils based on gender and qualifications. Descriptive design of survey type was adopted in this study. Two hundred and eighty (280) Basic school teachers were selected from 2,796Basic school teachers in Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State using proportionate stratified random sampling technique. The instrument that was used to gather data in this study was a questionnaire titled “Teachers‟ Attitudes towards Moral Development of Basic School Pupils Questionnaire” (TAMDBSPQ) The results showed that there is no significant difference between male and female teachers‟ attitudes towards moral development of Basic school pupils. Also, it was revealed that there is significant difference in the attitudes of teachers toward moral development of pupils based on qualifications. Based on these findings, a number of recommendations were made;one of which is that teachers should be more warmth and supportive as these traits create a bond between teachers and pupils which in turn can enhance the likelihood that pupils are motivated to listen to a teachers' message
