Applicability of lipid ratios in the prediction of atherogenic risks of women on combined oral contraceptive pills in North-central Nigeria
    (Wolters-Kluwer (MedKnow), 2023-06-05) Jimoh, O. S.; Jimoh-Abdulghaffaar, Hidaayah Oluwamayowa; Bakare, T. Y.; Popoola, G. O.; Oladosu, W. O.; Grillo, E. O.; Ahmed, A.; Adeniran, A. S.
Background: Combined Oral Contraceptive (COC) pill is associated with atherogenic and cardiovascular changes. Some service providers use individual lipid parameters to assess these changes unlike objective calculation using standard formulae. Objective: To determine and compare the atherogenic changes in women on COCs using six lipid ratios; coronary heart disease risk ratio, atherogenic index of plasma, atherogenic co-efficient, Cholesterol index, Castelli risk index I, and Castelli risk index II. Materials and Methods: A prospective, comparative study among new acceptors of contraceptives at four family planning clinics in Ilorin, North-Central Nigeria. Participants were categorized into COCs acceptors (group I, n=120) and acceptors of non-hormonal contraceptives (group II, n=120). Participants were followed up with serial lipid profiles at 0, 3 and 6 months after uptake. Atherogenic risks were calculated using six standard formulae; statistical analysis was with SPSS version 21.0 and Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the differences of more than two means, Bonferroni Post Hoc test was used to test for specific significance within the group and p-value <0.05 was considered significant. Results: A total of 225 participants (111 COC users, 114 non-COC users) aged 19 to 48 years completed the study. Serum levels of Low-Density Lipoprotein showed a statistically significant rise among the COC users over the study period (p=0.038), especially between the third and sixth months. The lipid ratios were statistically increased using all six methods despite apparently normal lipid parameters. Conclusion: Atherogenic changes may occur in the presence of apparently normal lipid parameters among COC users; therefore, serial lipid ratio using standard method formulae is recommended.

Determinants of voluntary blood donation among adults in communities of north central region of Nigeria
    (Osun State University, 2019-06-30) Salaudeen, AG; Durowade, K.A; Durotoye, I A.; Ahmed, A.; Sanni, E.O; M, O.I; Akande, T.M
Objective: The collection of blood from voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors is an important measure for ensuring the safety, quality, availability and accessibility of blood. The study assessed factors affecting voluntary blood donation in North-central zone, Nigeria. Methods: The study design was descriptive cross-sectional, data was collected using a pre-tested interviewer administered questionnaire from 3104 respondents using multistage sampling technique. Data was analyzed using EPI INFO computer software package (version 3.5.3). Level of significance was pre-determined at p-value < 0.05 at a confidence level of 95%. Results: Respondents with good knowledge of voluntary blood donation had better practice of voluntary blood donation. Younger age groups were 8 times more likely to donate blood voluntarily than older respondents. Yoruba ethnic groups are 1.5 times more likely to donate blood than other ethnic groups. Conclusion: For Nigeria and other developing countries at large to achieve 100% voluntary blood donation drive by year 2020, it is critical to change the blood donation culture from replacement to that of volunteerism through more effective communication and mobilization of donors. These efforts must be rendered more methodical and accomplished through a wider range of strategies.

EFFICIENCY OF AUDU & ADEWARA ((2017)) TWO--PHASE FACTOR--TYPE ESTIMATORS WITH TWO AUXILIARY VARIABLES IN SAMPLE SURVEY
    (Anale. Seria Informatică, 2017) Ahmed, A.; Adewara, A. A.
In this paper, efficiency of Audu & Adewara ([AA17]) two-phase factor-type estimators with two auxiliary variables for estimating finite population mean were examined using simulation. These estimators were obtained by incorporating some known functions of auxiliary variables X and Z in some existing factor-type estimators. Bias and Mean square error (MSE) of these estimators, yb1(d)FTAA and yb2(d)FTAA were obtained using tailor’s series expansion. Audu & Adewara ([AA17]) revealed that although yb1(d)FTAA and yb2(d)FTAA, have minimum MSE and high PRE than all other related existing factor-type estimators considered using three life dataset but of these two, which is more efficient and most preferred. The simulation results obtained in this study revealed that yb2(d)FTAA is more efficient than yb1(d)FTAA and hence, most preferred.

Modified Compromized Type Method of Imputation for Estimating Population Mean
    (Journal of Scientific Research of The Banaras Hindu University, 2022) Aliyu, Y. H.; Adewara, A. A.; Ahmed, A.; Abidoye, O. A.; Sulaiman, I.; Aliyu, M. B.
The study proposed an alternative imputation scheme for the schemes which converged to sample mean as the values of unknown parameters in their estimators converged to zero. The estimator of the population means for the proposed scheme as well as the bias and MSE were derived. The efficiency condition under which the modified estimator is more efficient than existing ones were also presented. Empirical study using four sets of populations was conducted and the results revealed that the proposed estimator was more efficient

RATIO AND PRODUCT TYPE EXPONENTIAL ESTIMATORS OF POPULATION VARIANCE UNDER TRANSFORMED SAMPLE INFORMATION OF STUDY AND SUPPLEMENTARY VARIABLES
    (Asian Journal of Mathematics and Computer Research, 2016) Ahmed, A.; Singh, R. V. K.; Adewara, A. A.
In this paper, we have suggested a class of modified ratio and product exponential estimators for finite population variance. The proposed class of exponential estimators was obtained by transforming both the sample variances and means of study and auxiliary variables of Singh et al. [1] and Asgha et al. [2] estimators. The mean square errors (MSEs) of the proposed estimators have been obtained and the conditions for their efficiency over some existing variance estimators have been established. The efficiency of proposed estimators based on optimal values of the constants, exhibit significant improvement over the estimators considered in the study. The numerical illustration was also conducted to corroborate the theoretical results. The result of the empirical study does not only show high efficiency of the proposed class of estimators over existing estimators but also save cost because their efficiency is high for small samples

ROBUSTNESS OF MODIFIED FACTOR-TYPE ESTIMATORS UNDER NON-RESPONSE MODEL
    (Anale. Seria Informatică., 2017) Ahmed, A.; Adewara, A. A.
In this paper, robustness of suggested modified factor-type estimators have been study under non-response model in relation to other existing related estimators of population mean. Mean square error (MSE) of suggested estimators under non-response model has been obtained and empirical study was done using Data 1, 2, 3 and 4. The robustness of the considered estimators were obtained by averaging their expected MSE and ranked accordingly to their level of efficiency. The results revealed that the efficiency of all the estimators considered increases as the proportion of non-respondent who responded after been re-interviewed increases and the suggested estimators compete favorably with almost the estimators considered in the study
