Item When Religion Threatens a Nation: Islamisation Agenda and the Hijab Crises in Nigeria(the University College of the North, Canada, 2020) Afolabi, A.S., Lewu, M.A.Y. & Thompson, O.O.Religion plays a huge role in conflicts in Africa. One religious issue, which has lately generated many tensions in Nigeria, is the hijab—a mandatory veil for female believers of Islam. Its use in certain public institutions has led to discrimination, abuse, and human ights violations. Against this backdrop, this study examines the contentious issue of the Hijab and the perceived Islamisation agenda in Nigeria, especially in the southern part of the country. Qualitative research methodology was adopted. The study revealed that the rejection of the hijab in public institutions and spaces in Christian-populated South is a contempory issue triggered by suspicions of an Islamic agenda in a secular state.
