Audiences on their part react to these emotional messages depending on the feeling expressed. Against this backdrop, a study was undertaken on the kinds of emotional messages people express on the social media platforms with close reference to Facebook, and responses elicited from audiences. Anchored on social sharing theory, the study adopted textual analysis as method of study. Population of the study was emotional messages on Facebook from which a sample was purposely drawn between June and August, 2017. These messages were descriptively analysed. Findings show a relative high preponderance of emotional messages with feelings of sorrow or grief that attract corresponding reactions with soothing tone, and that some reactions demonstrate a lack of understanding of some messages posted. The study concludes that from the pattern of messages, emotional posts with sorrowful undertone also attract high responses unlike messages with feelings of optimism, and fulfilment. The study recommends among other things that audience should understand the meaning of any emotional messages users post before they react to such messages.Item Comparative Analysis of Newspaper Framing of Public Officers' Corruption(Journal of Human Development and Communication, 2018) Adisa, Rasaq M.; Ahmed, Fahmi Mahmood; Ahmed, Kamaldeen Arikewuyo; Shuhairimi, Abdulah; Udende, Patrick; Nor'izah, Ahmad; Abubakar, Ibrahim; Maskor, Bajuri; Ahmad, Hizurrahman RezuanThis research was conducted to examine and compare the prevalence of public officials’ corruption frames in the online version among three popular Nigerian newspapers. Individual news article on public officials’ corruption was the unit of analysis while the reliability coefficients calculated using Holsti’s formula resulted to 90.0%. This study discovered that in the framing of 2016 public official corruption issues, the newspapers varied significantly with p=0.002 and p=0.000 respectively on corruption frames. However, the study, anchored on framing theory, identified economic consequence frames, the responsibility attributes, the treatment frames in the corruption issues. Further results revealed that the economic consequence frame identified financial losses with the total percentage of (63.8%). Nigerian government was framed as having highest responsibility for corruption eradication with the total percentage of (79.6%). Therefore, responsible government was recommended for treatment of corruption in Nigeria with the total percentage of (82.2%). While this study is focusing on the aspect of media frames, future researches can attempt to explore the area of audience frames where the study does not cover.Item Mass Media and Conflicts in Nigeria: a Call for Peace Oriented Journalism(General Studies Division, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, 2012) Adisa, Rasaq M.; Abdulraheem, MahmudItem News Framing: A Comparative Content Analysis of Newspapers Framing of Ethnic Issues in Nigeria(KSU Journal of Mass Communication, Department of Mass Communication, Kogi State University, Anyigba, Nigeria, 2015) Adisa, Rasaq M.The study examined the extent as well as patterns of conflict and peace oriented framings in three popular and widely circulated newspapers in Nigeria through a quantitative content analysis to ascertain the framing of news on ethnic issues. The unit of analysis was individual article that contained related items while the reliability coefficients calculated using Holsti’s formula resulted to 75.5%. This study discovered that in the framing of ethnic issues, the newspapers differed significantly on conflict framing. However, as much as high attention was given to conflict framing, it was discovered also that peace framing was not totally disregarded by the three newspapers. The newspapers have not entirely done very badly but have left much to be desired. The paper has significantly expanded understanding of how media cover conflicts and inflame the behaviours that lead to or worsen them.Item Newspaper Framing of Ethnic Issues and Conflict Behaviour in Nigeria(Journal of Communication and Media Research, Department of Mass Communication, Delta State University, Abraka, Delta State, Nigeria, 2016) Adisa, Rasaq M.News framing impact on public opinion and behaviour formation have been severally established. However, its influence on conflict behaviour has remained elusive or has not been adequately examined and positioned. This study explored framing of ethnic issues and conflict behaviour in Nigeria through a mixed methods design of qualitative and quantitative. Findings revealed that conflict behavior impulses and structural factors such as poverty, domination, and inequality are helixes but occasional realistic trigger for the eventual action was traced to newspaper framing and ethnic group leaders’ rheostat. The study concludes that the existence of ethnic groups in Nigeria is not a sufficient reason for hostility and ethnic conflict but for certain roles played by media and manipulation of some ethnic group leaders that cached in on government failure. This paper recommends further examination of social media influence on conflict behaviour and possibility of ethnic conflict triggering due to its wider reach and timeliness than conventional media.
