Item Adoption of Cassava Processing Innovations among Rural Women in Irepodun Local Government Area, Kwara State, Nigeria(Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Nigeria, 2013) Adisa, R.S.; Olatinwo, K.B.; Shola-Adido, O.This study analyzed women participation in Cassava processing in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria. It explores the intricacies of innovation adoption in rural based cassava processing enterprises in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria. It is therefore pertinent to undertake this study to investigate how the adoption of cassava processing innovations diffuses to the rural women. Primary data were obtained from 100 rural based cassava processors selected through a multistage sampling. The data were analyzed and presented with the use of descriptive statistical tools. Five null hypotheses were tested using z and proportional tests and correlation coefficient. The results show that 76% of the cassava processors adopted most of the improved cassava processing innovations. Adopters and non-adopters of the cassava processing innovation differ significantly in most of their social, economic and innovation related characteristics. The two exceptions are the estimated value of cassava processing enterprise (Naira) and the average distance regularly travelled (km/week). The adopters perceive the use of the innovation as easy and less complex than existing practice and have been in contact with the innovation for longer than nonadopters. The proportion of those aware of all the processing stages is more than those that are not aware. On the basis of the findings, it is recommended that extension agents must try to transfer simple innovations to rural women farmers rather than complex innovations. In Nigeria, processing African locust bean seeds (ALBS) into a soup condiment is a source of income among many rural households. Incidentally, ALBS processors are somewhat associated with poverty despite the widespread demand for the product. This study examined the economics and constraints of ALBS processing with a view to identifying the interventional imperatives. The study was conducted in late 2011 in Kogi State, Nigeria well known for the production of ALBS condiments. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select 139 respondents from a list of processors compiled with the assistance of leaders of the typically informal associations of ALBS processors. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data, while a reconnaissance survey of the study area was also conducted. A test-retest method was used to determine the reliability of the questionnaire, yielding a coefficient r value of .89, implying that the instrument was reliable. The results revealed that ALBS processing was dominated by middle-aged women, having little or no formal education and mainly using labour-intensive traditional techniques. Cost-benefit analysis, however, revealed a relatively high-profit margin. Regression analysis revealed that the cost of seeds, labour and water availability contributed most significantly to the output of ALBS processing among respondents. Major production constraints were ALB tree felling/burning, low technology application, and storage. The study recommended, inter alia, developing appropriate ALBS processing technology (such as a de-pulping machine) and virile extension and credit intervention.Item FARMER’S PERCEPTION ON ORGANIC POULTRY PRODUCTION IN KWARA STATE, NIGERIA(Faculty of Agriculture, University of Uyo, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, 2017-12-31) Adisa, R.S.; Kayode, A.O.; Abdulkareem, H.O.Organic Poultry Production is a system devoid of the use of cages, synthetic antibiotics, genetically modified organism etc. This study assessed the perception of poultry farmers on organic poultry production in Kwara State, Nigeria. A structured questionnaire was used to elicit information from 158 respondents. Descriptive statistics such as frequency count, percentages and mean score were used to collect data. The results of the analysis showed that 71.5% of the poultry farmers were males, the mean age of the farmers was 42 years, 85.4% were married while the mean years of education was 8.7 years. About 53.7% of the respondents were aware of consumer’s concerns about chemical residues in chicken. The more pressing constraints were lack of adequate information and awareness on organic poultry production. The study therefore concluded that the perception of poultry farmers to organic poultry farming in Kwara state is negative due to lack of adequate information and awareness. Therefore farmers and the general public need to be more enlighten by Agricultural agents and other relevant stakeholders on the health, nutritional benefits and management skills of organic poultry farming in the study area.Item Indigenous Methods of Controlling Pests among Rice Farmers in Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria.(Imo State University, Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria., 2009) Adesiji, G.B.; Ogunlade, I.; Bolarin, O.; Adisa, R.S.; Adefalu, L.L.; Raji, M.K.Item Powerpoint Presentation Preference by Library and Information Science Undergraduates in Kwara State, Nigeria(Department of Library and Information Science Undergraduates in Kwara State, 2015) Adisa, M.Y.; Adisa, R.S.; Olatinwo, K.L.; Olorunfemi, O.D.; Omotayo, A.O.Purpose: This study examined library and information science (LIS) undergraduate students’ preference for power point presentations. Through a survey approach, the study drew on 180 LIS undergraduate students from two universities in Kwara State, Nigeria. Design/Methodology/Approach: A self-designed questionnaire was used to gather data on the study. Data collected were analysed using percentages and frequency count. Findings: The result generally indicated that the students prefer power point presentation and have strong preference and attitudes towards the use of power point presentation because they find visual element, sound from popular media very helpful and interesting. The use of PPT has positive effect on students’ cumulative grade point. Based on gender, male students have a higher preference for the use of PPT than the female student in both institutions. The identified the perceived hindrances to the use of PPT as lack of skills to use PPT by most lecturers, epileptic power supply, fast pace instructional delivery by the instructors when using PPT etc. Implication: Based on the findings of the study, education institution authorities should consider the alternatives for power supply such as the procurement of inverters and power generating machine to supplement the general power supply from the Power holding company. Furthermore, lecturers are encouraged to go through proper training to develop necessary skills that will help them in proper delivery of their instruction with PPT and also reduce the fast pace in which lectures are delivered. Originality/Value: This study is unique because it’s seems to be one of the pioneer studies that examined Power Point Presentation Preference particularly among the population of Nigerian LIS undergraduate students. Similarly, the contents are the sole idea of the authors and the paper has never been submitted to any other publication outlets.Item The Use of Library among Agricultural Science undergraduates in Kwara State, Nigeria(Department of Science Education, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria, 2014) Adisa, M.Y.; Adisa, R.S.; Olatinwo, K.L.; Olorunfemi, O.D.; Omotayo, A.O.This study focused its attention on the use of library among university agricultural science students in Kwara State, Nigeria. Specifically, frequency of library use, resources available vis-avis impact on the academic performance of the students, factors associated with efficient use of library and the attitudes of students to library use were investigated. A well structured questionnaire was used to elicit information form 200 respondents selected through a stratified systematic random sampling from the two universities in Kwara State namely: University of Ilorin and the Kwara State University. Results revealed that majority (79%) of the students were below 25 years of age; about 57% were male, 97% unmarried, while 32.5% were fresh students. About 66% of the students used the library occasionally, 39% used information section mostly, 82% accessed agricultural books often, and 65.5% of the students visited the library during examination periods only. Also, majority of the respondents agreed that the prevailing library collections meet their research needs while most of the students exhibited a positive attitude towards the importance and need for them to adopt the use of library regularly with most of them believing that it will help them to record an increment in their examination score and general academic performance. It was further revealed that Cumulative Grade Points (r = 0.181; p = 0.032), level of the students (r = 0.129; p = 0.049), and (proposed) specialization (r = 0.158; p = 0.032) were significantly related to respondents’ attitude to library use. Major constraints factors to library use among the respondents include ageing collections and difficulty in locating books. It was recommended that lecturers should involve the students in activities that will make them to make use of the library more often thereby enhancing improvement in their academic performance.
