    An Assessment of the Resources and Services Provision for the Disabled Library Users in University of Ilorin and Federal College of Education (Special) Oyo

    The paper examines an assessment of the resources and services provision for the disabled library users in University of Ilorin and Federal College of Education (Special) Oyo. The study adapted the qualitative research approach in order to carry out the investigation. The population for this study consisted of all the disabled library patrons in University of Ilorin and Federal College of Education (Special) Oyo. The purposive sampling was used to select sample for this study. Three data gathering instruments consisting of questionnaires, observation and interview were used in this study. Data were analysed using frequency and percentages findings of the study showed that the deaf constitute 126%, follow by the dumb which is 84%. While others are the least in the University of Ilorin and Federal College of Education (Special) Oyo. Most of the disabled library users indicated that the resources and services of the library are accessible in Federal College of Education (Special) Oyo unlike that of university of Ilorin. They also indicated that information resources and services provided in the library to them met their needs. The paper concludes with few recommendations.

    DEVELOPMENT OF INSTITUTIONAL REPOSITORIES IN ACADEMIC AND RESEARCH LIBRARIES IN NIGERIA

    As knowledge is on the rise and research outputs from academic and research libraries continue to increase, there is a need to create access to some information materials that have no copyright restrictions so that information users can gain unhindered access electronically to institutional resources beyond where it is physically domicile for researchers’ benefits. The development of an Institutional Repository for academic and research libraries is the way forward because the process makes possible visibility of localized scholarly contents on web platform and also provide open access to the resources. In Nigeria, the establishment of the Institutional Repository in some academic and research institutions has helped to reduce researchers’ and students’ challenges of accessing information in institutions that are far off there residing location. This is a big challenge that can affect researchers’ efforts in gathering materials that they can cite for their research work. With more establishment of Institutional Repositories, access to localized information domiciled in the remote institutions can be easily accessed by visiting the institutional library online to retrieve the material. This paper explores the relevance of developing Institutional Repositories for open and unrestricted access to localized resources; and discusses academic and research libraries roles in developing institutional repositories; the types of software to be used for the development; and the hardware requirements alongside. The copyright infringements was addressed and the way forward to ensures that contents to be uploaded into the provision are checked using copyright checker called Sherpa Romeo.

    Digitization of Library Collection in Nigerian University Libraries: University of Ilorin Library Experience

    The aim of this paper is to discuss the difficulties that the University of Ilorin Library encountered in its digitization project and how these difficulties were handled to ensure a robust digitization outfit. The idea is to alert Nigerian Libraries which are yet to embark on digitization on some of the problems or challenges that they are likely to encounter in planning and implementing a digitization project. Admittedly, some of the problems may be unique to University of Ilorin Library but it can be said with a fair degree of accuracy that some of the problems the University of Ilorin Library encountered are general at the planning and the implementation stages. In this paper, the conception, the planning and the implementation stages of the project will be discussed. Problems will be highlighted and suggestions will be made for an effective and efficient digital service delivery.
