Item Comparative Foliar Morphology and Anatomy of Lagerstroemia L. (Lythraceae) and its Taxonomic Implications(Nigeria Journal of Botany, 2013) Kadiri, A.B.; Sulaimon, A. B; Adeniran, S.A.The two introduced species of Lagerstroemia in Nigeria are differentiated with some anatomical characters of the leaf and stem using light microscopy. Generic constant features are hypostomatic leaf, anomocytic stomatal type, bicollateral vascular bundle, presence of striations and a ring of sclerenchymatous hypoderm which subtends the vascular bundles. Copious distribution of striations on both surfaces of the leaf epidermis, closed vascular bundles, presence of mucilagenous cells and 25% stomatal index distinguish L. indica from L. speciosa which has scanty striations that are restricted to the adaxial surface of the leaf epidermis, closed or open vascular bundles, absence of mucilagenous cells and 20% stomatal index. Perhaps, these characters may be confined to individuals from tropical Africa. A bracketed identification key is also presented.Item Comparative Leaf Epidermis of Monodora Dunal. (Annonaceae) From Central and Western African and its Taxonomic Value(Library and Publication Committe University of Ilorin Nigeria, 2019) Adeniran, S.A.A comparative assessment of the leaf epidermis of seven species of Monodora from Central and Western African was carried out with the aid of light microscope and species’ affinities were shown with relationship polygraphs. The studied stomata and non-stomata characters yielded some outstanding taxonomic values leading to recognition of three groups that may equate infra-generic sections in the genus: Monodora angolensis and M. brevipes forming one group, M. myristica and M. tenuifolia forming the second group and, M. crispata, M.undulata and M. zenkeri as the third group. The quantitative characters overlap significantly but the discontinuity found within the values marks the species’ limit. On the average, epidermal cell number varies from 34±2 in M. myristica to 92±2 in M. zenkeri on the abaxial surface whereas on the adaxial surface, it varies from 18±1 in M. brevipes to 126±3 in M. undulata and, usually the cell size is slightly more than twice greater than the stomatal size in all the species except in M. tenuifolia. The only feature that is constant across the genus is hypostomatic leaves, while brachyparacytic stomatal type is a new record in the genus. With these epidermal features, the species can be distinguished and their identification can be based on the documented data even when the leaves are fragmentary.Item Gas chromatographic-mass spectrometry-based chemotaxonomic profiling of Senna, Cassia, and Albizia species of the Fabaceae family(Faculty of Life Sciences University of Ilorin Nigeria, 2026) Sagaya, A.; Lawal, A.L.; Adeniran, S.A.; Okewande, S.A.; AbdulRahaman, A.A.Senna, Cassia and Albizia are diverse genera within the Fabaceae family, characterised by complex taxonomy of morphological plasticity and hybridisation. This study employed Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) to profile the diethyl ether leaf extracts of nine species: Senna alata, C. fistula, S. podocarpa, S. obtusifolia, S. occidentalis, S. siamea, Albizia lebbeck, A. adianthifolia, and A. zygia. A total of 117 phytocompounds were identified across all the species studied, with 28 to 40 identified per species. Alcohols (34.19%) and carboxylic acids (17.95%) were the most prominent compounds. Four compounds: -3,7,11,15-Tetramethyl-2-hexadecen-1-ol, Phytol, 9-Octadecenamide, and n-Hexadecanoic acid- were present in all the species. Similarity indices ranged from 19.61% (S. siamea and S. podocarpa) to 58.62% (S. alata and S. occidentalis). Multivariate analyses revealed distinct groupings, notably the divergence of Albizia lebbeck, which formed a separate cluster characterized by a high abundance of 1-Monolinoleoylglycerol trimethylsilyl ether, Benzeneacetic acid, and 6,10-Dodecadien-3-ol, among other compounds. Conversely, S. podocarpa showed close affinity with Albizia species, defined by their shared abundance of alcohols (n-Nonadecanol-1 and 2-Pentadecyn-1-ol) and sterols (Lupeol and β-Sitosterol). These chemotaxonomic findings complement existing morphological data and provide refined differentiation among closely related species. The study demonstrates the value of GC-MS phytochemical profiling in resolving systematic relationships within Fabaceae.Item LEAF ANATOMY OF LETESTUDOXA BELLA PELLEGR (ANNONACEAE)(Library and Publication Committe University of Ilorin Nigeria, 2019) Adeniran, S.A.; Kadiri, A. B.; Olowokudejo J.D.A study of leaf anatomy (epidermis, architecture and midrib) of Letestudoxa bella was carried out using light microscope in order to provide useful anatomical features that will aid its identification. Hence, both qualitative and quantitative data of the leaf were assessed for their taxonomic significance. The shape of epidermal cells and its cell wall, type of wax depositions, type and number of stomata, areola formation, nerves ending, vein category, venation, type, shape and nature of vascular bundle, presence or absence of parenchyma and sclerenchyma are reliable criteria useful for identifying the plant. Outstandingly, the record of stephanocytic stomata in the genus is novel in the family Annonaceae. Other important findings in this study are the epidermal cell and stomatal number, length and width, and stomatal index which varied reasonably across the individuals of the species studied. The stomata number was recorded and its index calculated. A combination of these features proved can be reliably used to identify the species even when the leaf samples are fragmentary.Item Phytotoxicity and Morpho-anatomical Deformation in Corchorus olitorius and Senna occidentalis Correlating with Industrial Effluent Contaminating Soil(The Society for the Conservation of Phytofuels and Sciences, 2020) Sagaya, A; Abdulrahaman A. A.Environmental pollution from food or related industries via effluent discharge is a global threat to plants and animals and may ultimately threaten the quality of human. The present study aimed at evaluating the dangerous effect of industrial effluent on the toxicity and morpho-anatomical deformations of Corchorus olitorius and Senna occidentalis. The study was a split plot complete randomized design with two factors, each comprising of four treatments and three replicates which lasted for a period of three month. Treatment details include T0 = Tap water (control), T1= 25% pollutant + 75% tap water, T2= 50% pollutant + 50% tap water, T3= 75% pollutant + 25% tap water, T4= 100% pollutant. The result showed that a significant concentration of nickel, copper, lead, cadmium, chromium and iron were detected in the pharmaceutical effluent while copper, lead, cadmium, chromium, iron and mercury were detected in the soap and detergents effluent. A significant inhibition was observed at 100% concentration of the seedling growth parameters (stem length, leaf size, number of leaves and root length) in both Corchorus olitorius and Senna occidentalis while a significant reduction in leaf size was observed with increasing concentration of the industrial effluents. Anatomically, there was no difference in the epidermal cell size and the effluents increased some stomatal parameters such as stomatal density at 25% and 50% concentrations and decrease from 75% and 100% effluent concentration. It also increases the stomatal index and size at high or low concentrations. This study has shown that the two industrial effluents contained some harmful pollutants which are dangerous to life of the plants, adversely affected germination, growth and development at higher concentrations than lower concetrations, they also modified several anatomical structure in the leaf epidermis of Corchorus olitorius and Senna occidentalis.Item Plants in the Diet of African Forest Elephants in Okomu National Park, Nigeria(Library and Publication Committe University of Ilorin Nigeria, 2019) Bamidele, O.A; Akinsoji, A; Adeniran, S.A.The study was carried out to assess the phytosociological and proximate properties of vegetation foraged by elephant in Okomu National Park, Edo State Nigeria. Five (5) of the compartments with foraged plants were randomly sampled with two quadrats each measuring 20m x 20m in dimension at breast height of the trees. A total number of forty-seven (47) species belonging to thirty (30) families were identified of which seventeen (17) plant species were fed upon by the elephants in the area studied. The most dominant species on the basis of Importance Value ranking were Ceiba pentandra, Terminalia superba and Strombosia pustulata. The life form pattern of the foraged plants consists of 71% tree, 18% herb, 6% shrub and 6% vine. The part fed upon by elephants consists of tree barks, leaves, roots, tubers, fresh young fronds and fruits. The proximate composition of selected plant species eaten by the elephants showed highest percentage of moisture in the root of Thaumatococcus daniellii and highest percentage of carbohydrate in the tuber of Dioscorea praehensilis. The high moisture content in these species suggests a daring need for the survival of the elephants in the forest. However, few plant species did not meet the elephants’ nutrient requirements, hence their dependence on many species. The pattern of results obtained indicates reduction of tree densities which may lead to increase in herbaceous species because elephants feed on wide variety of plants which may alter the vertical structure of plants community. This kind of information will enhance management decision for sustainable management of the Okomu National Park.
