Item Development Partners, Civil Society Organisations and Democratic Consolidation in Nigeria(Department of Political Science and International Relations, Osun State University, Nigeria., 2018) Abubakar Abdulrahman; Zekeri, Momoh; Aliu Fatima O.; Isiaq, Abdulwaheed A.Donor support for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Nigeria has grown over the years with noticeable increase since the return of the country democratic rule on May 29, 1999. However, involvement and impact of CSOs in Nigeria's democratic processes have been treated with mixed feeling. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between development partners. civil society and democratic consolidation in Nigeria. Moreover, data for this study were obtained from text books. Journal articles. DFID report. USAID report and other similar international agencies. However. we discovered that there is absence of capacity development of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) at the state and local government level rather there is capacity development at the.national level. This has resulted to the marginalisation of state based civil society organisation that have contributed in demanding for accountability from political parties, elected officials, the media at-the state level. We argued here that for CSOs to effectively participate in democratic consolidation process in Nigeria their resource base and capacity must be enhanced for them to pay greater attention to grassroots development especially in the area of infrastructure.Item PARTICIPATORY DEMOCRACY IN PRE-COLONIAL NIGERIA: THE OLD OYO EMPIRE IN RETROSPECT(Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ilorin, Iloirn, Nigeria, 2015-12) Adebiyi, Oluwashina Moruf; Ishaq, Atanda Abdulwaheed; Abubakar AbdulrahmanPrior to the end of the twentieth century, democracy was the most sought after system of governance. The commencement of the present millennium also signaled the consolidation of the establishment of democratic practice in authoritarian polities. Today, only few countries have not embraced democratic rule. States which do not practice democracy in contemporary times are regarded as pariah states. However, the western proponents of democracy are of the opinion that the difficulty to establish democracy in Africa can be attributed to the level of development of respective African states. These western scholars portray Africa as strangers to democracy. While it may be asserted that African countries may encounter occasional setbacks in their democratisation process, they have made remarkable success. It is also important to note that while it is incontestable that the notion of modern democracy is a product of western idea, it can equally be argued that democratic practices is not completely alien to Africa. A retrospective analysis of pre-colonial African political structure will reveal that traditional African societies are not devoid of what may be regarded as the practice of democracy. These indigenous societies had political practices which bear semblance with what is obtained today. Using the pre-colonial Old Oyo Empire as a point of reference and a careful investigation of relevant secondary data and multi-disciplinary approach, the paper argued that what can be described as democratic practices actually existed in the Empire. The paper however, concludes that these democratic practices were abolished by the advent of colonial ruleItem THE INVOLVEMENT OF THE NIGERIA POLICE IN CURBING INSURGENCY IN NIGERIA(Department of Criminology & Security Studies, University of Ilorin, 2023-03) Monsurat Isiaka; Austin Oladele; Ismail Ayatullah Nasirudeen; Abubakar Abdulrahman; Hassan, Adijat KuburatThe 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria makes clear the makeup, organization, and operational oversight of the Nigeria Police Force. The preservation of human life and material goods is the main focus of this, among others. Currently, Nigeria is fighting an insurgency that has decimated several areas of the north-eastern region of the country. There is a paucity of research on the Nigeria Police Force's contribution to this conflict, despite the fact that the majority of studies have focused on how the Armed Forces have attempted to quell insurgency and terrorist activity. By highlighting the existence of certain of Nigeria's police special units like Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD), K9, Forensics, and Intelligence, a portion of their tasks can be comprehended. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the Nigerian police have helped to quell insurgency in that country. The finding reveals that the Nigeria Police are also involved in the war against insurgency. However, the lack of sophisticated equipment is a major impediment which has hindered the effectiveness of the force. The conclusion of this study recommends, among others, that the Nigerian government should enter stronger bilateral and multilateral relations with high technologically advanced nations to purchase highly sophisticated equipment to combat the insurgents. Similarly, government should share experience with those nations that have successfully fought the menace in their respective domains in order to learn the best tactics to deploy in combating the war.
