Item Functional Adult Literacy: A Tool for Enhancing Artisans Entrepreneurship Skills Development in Nigeria(Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, 2025-01-30) Bilikis Ajoke, OLASINDE; Abdulsalam Oladimeji, SHOLAGBERU; Ahmed SANNIThe traditional meaning of literacy as the ability to read and write has continued to evolve in recent times in order to accommodate other natures of literacy. It is now clear that there is not one literacy but multiple literacies found in different domains of people’s daily lives. Functional literacy is this the application of literacy skills to the day to day activities of an individual to function in his environment. Artisans takes a larger percentage of Nigeria's workforce and has for generations, continued to be a provider of employment. However, many artisans have become redundant and irrelevant as a result of lack of awareness and inability to recognise opportunities due to illiteracy. This paper therefore seeks to explore functional adult literacy education as a tool for enhancing artisans’ enterpreneurship skills development in Nigeria. Effect of literacy on artisans’ enterpreneurship skills development was examined as well as the challenges of functional literacy education. This paper concluded that functional adult literacy has the potential to enhance artisans enterpreneurship skills and accord them the ability to meet up with demand of the ever changing world. This paper recommended the need for government to make functional literacy accessible for everyone at all government levels and urge the leadership of artisans’ association to encourage its members to acquire literacy skills in order to improve their enterpreneurship skills and relevance.Item Promoting Literacy and Readability Levels Among Adult Learners Through Library and Information Services in Nigeria(Published by the Department of Counselling Psychology, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State, NIgeria., 2024) Abdulsalam Oladimeji, SHOLAGBERU; Boman Achi, AFINIKI; Zainab Shekwobagu, BASHIR USMANIt has become evident that libraries are not passive repositories of books but dynamic hubs of learning and knowledge dissemination. Thus, this paper focuses attention on the roles of library in promoting literacy level among adult learners in Nigeria. It discusses the need to promote literacy to tackle insecurity, the imperative role of library in promoting literacy and readability culture among adults for them to be aware of issues around them and finally, some challenges faced by libraries with regards to literacy promotion were discussed. It was established from the study that libraries serve as an agent of 'information dissemination and as inevitable tools for promoting literacy they sustain the nation. Also, the impacts of library services in promoting literacy level are high they have the tendency of improving the reading culture of users One of the recommendations made was that libraries should invest in digital resources, e-books, and online databases to ensure students have access to a wide range of materials, especially in the digital age. Also, relevant library materials which include electronic resources should be made available for users as this will go a long way to enhance each user's literacy level.
