Though the election was scored high by local and international observers, it was not without flaws. The pre-election period witnessed one of the highest level of propaganda in the country. During this period, propaganda was at its peak as the PDP took advantage of its opportunities as the ruling party to spread negative messages about the opposition. However, while this large and well-orchestrated propaganda have been found successful in the past, the dominance of the PDP in the propagandistic war of the last election failed to produce the desired result. This study therefore sought to ascertain audience perception of the use of propaganda by PDP in the just concluded 2015 presidential election by examining the effectiveness of propaganda in political campaigns. Thus, premised on the theory of propaganda, this study surveyed 324 randomly selected respondents from the University of Ilorin. The emergence of social and digital media platforms is, however, changing narratives about news consumption, particularly among the youths. While the digital media platforms rekindled the interest of the young audience, these alternative sources lack the gatekeeping qualities unique to the mainstream media and give room for doubts on the credibility of information sourced therein. This study, therefore, examined the influence of perceived credibility on the use of and dependency on social network sites for news among the young audience (N=381) from the Uses and Gratifications (U&G) and media system dependency theoretical lens. Findings revealed that, youth sampled use Social Networking Sites (SNSs) to source information and news on celebrity, educational, sport, political matters and investment issues. They also affirmed the centrality of the news on SNSs to their decision making about important issues Additionally, it was found that perceived credibility was a significant predictor of use and dependency on news on social networking sites. This study signals the need to leverage on youth’s consumption of news on the social media to enhance certain practical and policy improvements on news dissemination in today’s digitalised media environment. The importance of language as a fundamental element of human communication is indeed beyond dispute. In the case of mass mediated messages, the media’s powers of shaping the people’s perception of reality on issues bordering on national security and sustainable development in general can obviously not be achieved without the use of language. While scholars generally agree on the fact that the media are useful vehicles in promoting development, one issue which remains unresolved however is that of “what roles are assigned to which language in the media”. This is especially as the logic of administrative convenience clashes with the logic of linguistic diversity. In a multilingual society such as Nigeria, indigenous languages are an important tool capable of empowering and mobilizing large sections of the populace, particularly those who are not literate in English, which serves as the official language of many Nigerian media organizations. With the present state of insecurity in the nation, no group of people, whether literate or non-literate, should be denied access to vital issues related to security and development. This paper seeks to bring to the fore the imperative of promoting indigenous languages in media content with a view to exploring the links between indigenous language, communication for development and mass mobilization on issues of national security.Item National Youth Service Corp Scheme and the Quest for National Unity and Development: A Public Relations Perspective(College of Social and Management Sciences, Joseph Afe Babalola University, Osun., 2012-10) Udende, Patrick; Abdulrauf-Salau, AishatDoubts have shrouded the essence of the National Youth Service Corps scheme. Thus, we compare this phenomenon among youth in two second wave democracies; Nigeria and Malaysia. These countries may not have been focus of much comparative studies of this nature considering their distance geographically, however politically, their similarities are quite significant. Consequently, this gap in comparative research was addressed by the present study. To this end, a survey was conducted on 476 samples in both countries and analysis was carried out using the Partial Least Squares – Multi Group Analysis (PLS-MGA). Accordingly, we find that there is no significant difference between youth in Nigeria and Malaysia in terms of the relationship between Access to Political Information on Facebook and Twitter (APIFT) and Online Political Participation on Facebook and Twitter (OPPFT).
