Schools play a significant role in every society. They create opportunities by bringing out the socio-economic potentials of the neighbourhoods and also attract both economic and social activities to the area. Nonetheless, schools are also a cause of social vices such as crime and violence. Just as criminality in communities that surround a school can spill over into the school and disrupt learning activities, so does criminality among students, can spill into the immediate environment. This study investigates the extent to which the presence of public secondary schools is linked to the crime rate in some neighbourhoods where schools are located in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey was the research design adopted and purposive and simple random sampling methods were used in selecting 476 respondents for the study. The study employed a structured questionnaire for data gathering and information gathered was analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSSS). The results indicated a statistical relationship between the presence of schools, age of perpetrators and neighbourhood crime rate in communities understudy. (Department Of Crime And Security Studies, Faculty Of Social Science, University Of Ilorin, Ilorin, 2023) Abdullahi Kayode Ibrahim; Toyin Olayinka Tejideen; Salihu Zakariya Abdulbaqi; Abdullateef Abiodun Atiku
Abstract The role of the Nigerian Police in multinational Peace-keeping operations has grown dramatically over the years. The goal of Peace-keeping as a conflict control tool is to regulate or prevent international conflicts. However, there are several obstacles for the Nigerian Police force in terms of efficiency and continuity in assisting and conducting Peace-keeping operations in most countries in Africa. Nigerian police often face myriads of difficulties in ensuring and establishing peace and harmony particularly in conflicting areas in Africa. However, the study utilized quantitative research method and adopted a descriptive survey using a structured questionnaire. Simple random sampling technique was used for the respondents and Liberal peace theory was used as a theoretical guide. Using a quantitative enquiry, a total of 75 questionnaires were administered to police officers across all 36 states, in Nigeria including FCT. Since this research is explanatory, a purpose sampling technique was used to cluster the population into the most important groups to the study which are police officers that participated in peace-keeping missions in Somalia. Findings indicates that the challenges faced by the peace keeping officers includes poor funding, language barrier, cultural differences, inadequate man power and equipment and poor preparedness of some officers among others. The study recommends that government should adequately fund the operation, qualified and ready to serve officers must be recruited, officers must be trained about other people's culture and sophisticated equipment must be provided for smooth and effective peace keeping operation.
