Item ASSESSMENT OF INFRASTRUCTURAL SERVICES PROVISION BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IN THE SOUTH EAST GEO-POLITICAL ZONE AND IMPLICATIONS FOR RESTRUCTURING(Department of Sociology, University of Ilorin, 2021) Abonyi, S.E; Arinde-Simeon, T.O; Abdulhameed, AAbstract The lop-sided infrastructural architecture in many geopolitical zones in Nigeria since the enthronement of President Mohammadu Buhari administration in 2015 seemsto be one of the main causes of the current political agitations and secessionist movements calling for restructuring. Notwithstanding the provision of the nation's constitution that guarantees true federalism with equity, justice, and fairness, many people, especially in the Southeastregion of Nigeria have alleged favoritism and marginalization in the provisions of some basic infrastructuralservices. The paper examined the nature of infrastructuralservices provided in this geo-political zone (south east) in comparison with other geopolitical entities in Nigeria and its implications to political restructuring. The qualitative method of data collection was employed with In-depth Interview (IDI) as the major instrument although complemented with secondary sources The Equity Theory and Spatial Inequality Theory formed the theoretical framework of the study. Findingsfrom the study revealed that the southeast geo-politicalzone has been marginalized in infrastructural services distribution which the respondents attributed to ethnicity and religious differences. The respondents did not consider resources derivation as an attributable factor but agreed generally that the refusal of the zone to vote massively for the ruling government in 2015 and 2019 general elections respectively accounted fortheir ordeal. Given these revelations, some recommendations were made geared at embracing equity, justice, and fairness in infrastructural services distribution which will also douse the current tension forrestructuringItem ASSESSMENT OF INFRASTRUCTURAL SERVICES PROVISION BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IN THE SOUTH EAST GEO-POLITICAL ZONE AND IMPLICATIONS FOR RESTRUCTURING(Department of Sociology, University of Ilorin, 2021-10) Abonyi, S.E; Arinde-Simeon, T.O; Abdulhameed, AAbstract The lop-sided infrastructural architecture in many geopolitical zones in Nigeria since the enthronement of President Mohammadu Buhari administration in 2015 seemsto be one of the main causes of the current political agitations and secessionist movements calling for restructuring. A.,; Abdulhameed, A; Abonyi, S.E.,; Arinde-Simeon, T.O.,Abstract Tobacco intake in form of cigarette smoking is detrimental to human health. It has been estimated that about a third of the world's population, aged 15 years and above, are smokers. Tobacco is made of nicotine substance which is harmful to smokers who indulge in cigarette smoking. Evidence suggests that psychosocial, biological and genetic factors all play a role in nicotine addiction. And it is strongly related to many chronic diseases which includes coronary heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis. In spite of these health risk challenges, adolescents still derive pleasure in smoking tobacco with little or no idea on the consequences of cigarette smoking due to certain factors that militates their interest into cigarette smoking and this includes peer pressure, family background and environmental consequences. This article therefore examined the problems associated with cigarette smoking among students of tertiary institutions in Nigeria; it highlights the health risk of tobacco products and explains the nicotine intake disorders among adolescents. In a bid to foster understanding to this dreadful act, it recommended that, Nigeria government, the civil society organizations, every health professionals and social workers alike should be involved in the struggle to reduce increasing level of tobacco intake through consented effort and control measures.Item Cigarette smoking disorders among adolescent students in nigeria tertiary institution:(Department of Psychology, University of Ilorin, 2021-03) Atiku, A.A; Abdulhameed, A; Abonyi, S.E; Arinde-Simeon, T.OTobacco intake in form of cigarette smoking is detrimental to human health. The social phenomenon of sexting is deleterious, not only to those engaging in the malaise, but also to the society at large. This study adopts a survey method to investigate the factors that predispose undergraduate students to sexting. Using stratified sampling technique, a total of 385 sample size was selected from the University of Ilorin undergraduate population. Questionnaire as the instrument used was tested for validity and reliability using the face and content validity and internal consistency reliability, respectively. Hypothesis testing was conducted using the t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), while frequency counts were used to analyse the demographic data. Based on the theory of planned behaviour (TPD), the study found that factors including gender, sexual orientation, and age of the undergraduate students do contribute to the social phenomenon of sexting. Recommendations were made that there should be an intensive sensitization against sexting for the young adults and their parents. School social work should be strengthened and social workers should be trained on social interventions to adopt in helping the youths involved in this act. S; Abdulhameed, A; Oladeinde, D. D.Europe and America have a long history of formalisation of help and E institutionalisation of social social welfare. Many organisations were formed to champion this course. These organisations were predominantly popular especially in England during the formalisation of the Elizabethan Poor Law of 1601. Other events that impacted the formalisation of help and welfarism are the Industrial and French revolutions, the First World War and America's 'Great Depression' in the 1930s. The huge successes of the various programmes aimed at alleviating and ameliorating the suffering of people of those periods paid more attention to the establishment of a standardised welfarism profession. This gradually led to the emergence of many social welfare workers who desired to be more proactive and productive by providing a wide range of services that were not just restricted to social welfare. Subsequently, humanitarian workers such as Mary Richmond and Jane Addams emerged. Jane Addams was interested in social welfare and how states had failed in discharging their duties of provision of social amenities to all and sundry. This assumption fuelled the development of social case work by Mary Richmond who believed that social problems stem from an individual problem(s) and as such, individual's needs must be prioritised. This subsequently led to her unique method called 'social case work'. Consequently, the idea of treating a personal problem as a unique rather than a collective problem inspired the profession to integrate social case work into social welfare. The integration of social welfare with social case work thereafter metamorphosed into the development of Social Work as a discipline and profession today (Watts & Hodgson, 2019). This chapter therefore, looks at the concept of Social Work, functions of Social Work, principles of Social Work, intervention process in Social Work, relationship between Social Work and other disciplines, fields or specialisations in Social Work and finally, theories in Social Work.Item Foundation of social work(Department of Sociology and Department of Social Work, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, 2019) Yusuf, M.S.,; Abdulhameed, A; Oladeinde,D.D.Europe and America have a long history of formalisation of help and of social welfare. In view of this, a comparative study of incidence of crime in two neighbourhoods (Kuntu and GRA) in Ilorin, Kwara State was carried out. The target populations are the residents of the two areas. A total of two hundred and fourty (n=240) respondents were purposively selected from the two neighbourhoods (one hundred and twenty from each neighbourhood). Questionnaires were administered to the respondents in their respective residential areds. Out of the two hundred and fourty questionnaires that were administered, two hundred and twenty-five were completed and returned and good for analysis. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as percentile and mean score methods. The percentile method was used to analyze the socio-economic characteristics of the respondents in the two neighbourhoods; and the mean score method was used to compare the incidence of crime in the two neighbourhoods. The results revealed that the incidence of crime in Kuntu neighbourhood is higher, while the incidence of crime is lower in GRA neighbourhood.. Based on this conclusion, it was recommended that structural planning of deteriorated neighbourhoods and mproving socio-economic conditions of the residents of unplanned neighbourhoods would go a long way in reducing the incidence of crime in llorin metropolis.Item Peer influence socio-economic status and unemployment as predictors of youth engagement in sport betting in ilorin metropolis(Faculty of Business and Social Sciences, University of Ilorin, 2020-06) Abdulhameed, A; Yusuf, M.S; Arinde-Simeon, T.Ohe study examined peer influence, socio-economic status and unemployment as predictors of youth engagement in sport betting in Ilorin Metropolis. A; Adekola O. T.; Yusuf, M.S; Abdulhameed, A; Mohammed, A. H.Ageing does not only change how people look, it changes how they think, behave and the functions of their body system. Even though, many elderly people experience a lot during this stage, social workers who work in care agency like geriatric homes are expected to be aware of some of the challenges during old age. This study investigates the major challenges that faced the elderly. In addition, the study also investigates the perceived knowledge and attitudes of social workers towards the elderly in Ilorin, Kwara state. Eleven participants who are social workers working in geriatric homes were purposively selected for the study. Data collected was analysed using thematic analysis. The study found stroke, memory loss, ageism, isolation and resource mobilization as the part of the perceived experience of elderly people. The traditional emphasis on family-centered care is fast becoming a relic of the past because of changes in family dynamics. The study recommends that there is need for government at all level to establish geriatric hospitals where the interdisciplinary team including the social workers who have a clear understanding of older people's challenges will be employed. Lastly, the paper concluded that there is little or no effort from governments to support geriatric institutions in Kwara stateItem Prevalence and associated risk factors for drug abuse among youths in the Ilorin Emirate, Nigeria(Faculty of Social Sciences, Imo State University, Owerri, Nigeria., 2024-09-25) Abdulhameed, A; Osazuwa, F. E; Oseni, J.; Wemimo, E. DThis study focused on the prevalence and associated risk factors for drug abuse among youths in the Ilorin Emirate, Nigeria, and implications for social welfare intervention. The population of the study consisted of all people within the age cohort of youth who are involved in drug abuse in the study area using purposive sampling to select six organisations that are dealing with people who abuse psychoactive drugs within the area of study. The study used snowballing to draw forty (40) research participants from each organisation, totalling 240 participants. The structured questionnaires were content validated, and the Cronbach alpha formula was used to determine the internal consistency reliability coefficients of 0.74, 0.84, 0.79, and 0.81, respectively, were obtained from all the scales. The data collected were via descriptive statistics, such as frequency counts, percentages, pie charts, means and standard deviations. The findings revealed that alcohol, cannabis/marijuana, tramadol, cigarette/tobacco, and Arizona, among others, are the leading drugs commonly abused by youth and have adverse effects on users. Equally, the study shows that inadequate staffing and stigmatisation from the public are the major factors impeding effective social welfare intervention in the study area. On the basis of these findings, the study recommended that there is an urgent need to recruit more social workers and establish more social welfare organisations that are dealing with people who abuse one form of drug or another to increase the number of qualified personnel that can handle such cases.Item Social Workers and Community Development(Department of Sociology and Department of Social Work, University of Ilorin, Ilorin., 2019) Abdulhameed, A
