Item A Play Director’s Re-modelling of Alternative Conflict Resolution in Share/Tsaragi Communal Feud in Nigeria(Rivers State University, Portharcourt, Nigeria, 2025-01) ARINDE Tayo Simeon; OJEDIRAN Oludolapo; AKINSIPE Felix AkintundeConflict is pre-historic and in reality, it is equally universal. In essence, the mechanism of the theatre as an alternative method in resolving communal conflict was tested during the Share/Tsaragi's communal fend in Nigeria. This Directorial approach celebrates the ubiquitous dynamics of the director and theatre as tool for alternative conflict resolution mechanism. Through the qualitative method, complimented with the participant observation tool and Don Elger's The Theory of Performance (ToP) (2023), this paper examines the essence of a play director's re-modelling of the alternative conflict resolution mechanism in the Share/Isaragi communal feud in Nigeria. Findings in this study show that conflicts in many communities are exasperated by personal interest, test of strength, popularity and ignorance. The study concludes that to continue to witness peace in any environment; the need to consider religion, social interaction, dialogue and engagement epitomised in theatrical performances are channel to positive mutual benefit. It is recommended in the study that using the theatre to engage restless youths and agitating adults will be a stimulating, rewarding and educating approach that would give birth to a harmonious and long lasting relationship experience.Item Aesthetics: The Oil on the Canvass of Play Directing(Department of the Performing Arts, University of Ilorin., 2005) ARINDE Tayo SimeonItem Climate Change, a threat to Cultural Development in Africa:Theatre to the rescue(Department of Classics and Philosophy, University of Cape Coast, Ghana, 2011-09) ARINDE Tayo SimeonThis paper observes that the phenomenon of climate change, which has left devastating blows on the cultural development of African people is occasioned by man's incessant quests for modernity as opposed to his adherence to the indigenous cultural practices. consequently, this paper presents theatre as a potent mechanism that is capable of reducing the negative consequences of the phenomenon of climate change, which has elicited very serious concern among environmental expert and the enlightened people of this continent. the study employs pragmatic theoretical approach, using ''Theatre for Development' TFD for the methodology. The objective of the work is to showcase theatre as an effective tool, an Alternative Development Medium (ADM) that can provide ameliorative avenue that will reduce the effects of the climate change for the sustenance of cultural development in Africa. Arising from the above, this paper concludes that theatre, using the Theatre for Development (TFD) approach is an effective design for solving all societal problems.Item Mediating peace in a conflict-riddled society: A study of Rasheed Adeoye’s The Killers.(Department of Theatre and Performing Arts, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria., 2019-09) ARINDE Tayo SimeonThis paper expounds on the nature and features of Drama. It exploits Adeoye's The Killers, a socio drama, to assert drama as a model and a tool for exerting and mediating peace in a conflict and crisis riddled society. The paper expounds that Drama by its characteristics has its strengths in conflicts and an undoubting sway in proffering solutions to them. Stemming from this, the study employs the analytical descriptive approach to explore and unearthing some of the societal ills identified in the play under examination and the theatre-inclined solutions proffered therein. The findings revealed that drama is a didactic and a fearless instrument that is pungent in pinpointing societal vices, cautions and suggest ways forward. The study also revealed that, in theatre,resides the entertainment power, which soothes, warns, educates and chastises perpetrators of evil in the society as clearly shown in the text The Killers. This paper presents a position that if women were given a slice of the opportunity that was available to men in the governing process, the world would be a better place to live in. In this direction, this paper appraises the roles played by women in J. P. Clark’s The Wives’ Revolt and Zikky Kofoworola’s Queen Gashengeh. It also explores their laudable and invaluable contributions to the advancement of peace in our society. The paper observes that inequality and restricted political opportunities granted women globally is the bane of the lost peace in our society. This paper concludes that readdressing and correcting the imbalance, as well as harness the untapped reservoir of wisdom deeply seated in our women is what our nations need for the attainment of global peace. This we found in the antecedents of some women who have served our nation in various capacities in the past. Consequent upon attainment of global peace.Item Yoruba Cultural Ethos and Liminal Dramaturgy: A Directorial Tool in Ahmed Yerima’s Kutelu and Ikudeti(University of Education, Winneba, Ghana, 2026-03-31) ARINDE Tayo Simeon; OJEDIRAN Oludolapo; OMONIYI Oluwatimileyin; FAKAYODE Abolade OlawaleAfrican playwrights, relishing on the creative and artistic embellishments in their writings, have used creative ingenuity to present the cultural ethos of Yoruba people to the global world, especially those who are alien to cultural cosmology of the Yoruba people. In the same direction, play directors have also used the tools to bring to the fore of theatre audiences;entertainment,education and enlightenment. In this direction, the creative adventure of Ahmed Yerima, which captures some of these cultural mainframes are identified in the selected play-texts, Kutelu and Ikudeti(2020). This is with a view to showcasing the cultural ethos and the liminal dramaturgy of the Yoruba culture and their relevance to the existence of man in their terrestrial space. Arnold Berleant (2005) theory of cultural aesthetics is used in the paper to explicate the Yoruba ethos and liminal dramaturgy as exploited by Ahmed Yerima in the selected play-texts and how he has through the literary works construct the link that exists between reality and imagination of the cultural philosophy of the Yoruba people. The paper concludes that cultural ethos and liminal dramaturgy are tools that play directors can use to seamlessly articulate African dramatic expressions. Consequently, playwrights are encouraged to explore more cultural ethos and symbolic extractions to showcase African rich cultural heritage.
