Item (In) validating Cohen’s Assertion on Agenda-setting Theory using Media Coverage and What People Think about Muhammadu Buhari’s 2015 Campaign Mantra(Department of Mass Communication, Novena University, Ogume, Delta State, 2017) ARIKEWUYO, Abdulgaffar Olawale; Udende, PatrickBernard Cohen made an assertion that media may not tell people what to think but do tell them what to think about. That through agenda-setting, media provides salience to certain issues at the expense of other seemingly prominent issues. On the basis of this, we carried out a study to ascertain the fact that the agenda media set is related to what people think about with close reference to Muhammadu Buhari’s three point campaign promises during the 2015 presidential election. The population of the study was Ilorin where a sample of 333 respondents was purposively drawn. Findings show that media emphasis on three major issues of President Muhammadu Buhari to curb corruption, eliminate insecurity and provide a platform for the unemployed to secure gainful employment correlate with what people thought were germane. This study therefore seeks to find out the motivations as well as psychological effects behind posting, liking and sharing wedding pictures and videos on social media platforms among Nigerian youth. A random sampling of 350 (n=350) Nigerian youth was carried out. Findings reveal that the act of posting, liking or sharing of wedding pictures and videos on social media platforms by the youth could translate to their desire to publicize the designers and decorators due to their love for what they wear. The study is also able to infer that quite a number of Nigerians who post wedding pictures and videos on social media do so with the intention of showing the kind of extravagant life style they live.Item Role of Social Media in Eradicating Violence among Young Nigerian Females: A Study of Nigerian Students in Eastern Mediterranean University(2017-09) ARIKEWUYO, Abdulgaffar Olawale; ÖZAD, Bahire; ABDULBAQI, Saudat SalahThe 21st century social media has been described as a veritable tool to campaign and speak for the female gender. This study seeks to find out how social media is used to eradicate violence and sexual harassment in Nigeria. The study adopts quantitative methodology, a random sampling of 350 Nigerian students studying at the Eastern Mediterranean University in North Cyprus participated and questionnaires were administered to these Nigerian students in the 2016-17 fall semester. Findings reveal that 94% of the females attest to the fact they have been exposed to one form of violent abuse or the other from the opposite sex. Majority of the respondents representing 79.6% also attest to the fact that social media helps in the campaign on violence against women. The study reveals that poverty is one of the leading issues that is currently increasing the abuse against the female gender in Nigeria. Social Media was affirmed as one of the tools that have been helping women speak for their rights and as well serves a mechanism for proper enlightenment on how to protect themselves.Item Social Media Pornography consumption in Achieving Satisfaction in Romantic Relationships(2019) ARIKEWUYO, Abdulgaffar Olawale; ÖZAD, Bahire; ABDULBAQI, Saudat Salah; OKOJI, Chuwudinma Taiwo; OLOYEDE, David BintaThe increasing rate in pornography consumption has been ascribed to the users’ access to communication devices such as social media platforms. The ultimate aim of this study was to find out whether consuming pornography on social media serves as a means of satisfying romantic desires. With the aid of the Uses and Gratifications Theory, the study adopted a quantitative methodology in investigating the phenomenon. Findings revealed that watching pornography helps the male gender earn more pleasure in their romantic relationship while it equally prevents them from cheating on their partners. The study also revealed that romantic partners receive gratifications from watching pornography on social media. Our findings also revealed that the frequency at which individuals or romantic partners watch pornography also has a significant influence on the satisfaction received with their romantic relationship desires.Item Use of Social Media for Establishing Virtual Relationships among Select University Students(Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, University of Ilorin, 2018-05-15) ARIKEWUYO, Abdulgaffar OlawaleThis research is an investigation of a prominent social media community (River 9ija) of Nigerian students across various higher institutions. Through in-depth interview, the study sampled 27 Nigerian students studying in various higher institutions in different countries. Findings from this study revealed that social media platforms do not only function as a medium of social connection and interaction; they play pivotal and significant roles in educating, informing, establishing all forms of business, romantic and educational relationships. Findings further showed that River 9ija is a great tool for fostering community integration. It was also found that the virtual community creates an opportunity for students to understand themselves better and have a common goal. Based on the findings, it was concluded that university students have found a common and unifying ground where they can interact and express themselves. It was, therefore, recommended that interaction via River 9ija needs to be encouraged, but moderated so that these students will not lose focus or concentration while in school.
