    Assessment of Private Secondary Schools' Administration Effectiveness in Kwara State, Nigeria, 1999-2022

    This study assessed private secondary schools’ administration effectiveness in Kwara State, Nigeria from 1999 to 2022. The target population comprised all private secondary schools in Kwara State, while the accessible population was 188 private secondary schools registered under the Kwara State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development. The historical research method was adopted in the study. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 760 participants including Proprietors, Principals, experienced teachers, Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), Officials of the Ministry of education and its agencies. Questionnaire and structured interview were used as instruments to collect the data. Thematic analysis and percentage were used to answer the research questions in the study. The findings revealed that all private secondary schools in Kwara State were majorly administered by the proprietors of the various schools, through the principals, vice-principals, heads of departments, teachers and non-teaching staff, subject to the monitoring and supervision of the government. Based on the findings, it was concluded that private secondary schools were funded via proprietors’ personal money, school fees, levies, and other charges paid by the students, voluntary donations from private individuals or organisations. Likewise, it was recommended that proprietors should continue to provide adequate funds for their schools and always maintain mutual relationship with parents, guidance, members of the public, corporate organisations and government to accrue more funds to the school via donations, PTA and loans from either banks or government to facilitate effective operation which would help to actualise the stated goals.

    EFFECT OF DRUG ABUSE ON MORAL BEHAVIOUR OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ILORIN-SOUTH LGA, KWARA STATE

    Sales of Alcohol, Marijuana, Indian hemp and other dangerous herbs that can easily be purchased from unregistered drug vendors in the Community, especially in school surroundings encourage drug abuse. Similarly, failure of Government to strictly enforce its existing laws against drug abuse through its regulatory agencies is also a contributory factor to youths getting involved in drug abuse specifically, Secondary School students who will be our future leaders. Thus, this study examined the effect of drug abuse on moral behaviour of Secondary School students in Ilorin-South Local Government Area of Kwara State. The simple random sampling technique was adopted to select 30 teachers and 150 students from the five selected public Secondary Schools in the Local Government Area as sample. The instrument used was the questionnaire while analysis of variance was employed to test the three hypotheses generated in this study. The findings revealed that there was significant relationship between the drug abuse and students’ riot, bullying of fellow students and students’ disobeying school authorities in Secondary Schools. Based on the findings, it is recommended that Government should prevent the cultivation or sales of Indian hemp, other dangerous herbs that encourage drug abuse and strictly enforce its existing laws against drug abuse through its regulatory agencies. Also, parents and guardians should endeavor to monitor their children so that they do not engage in drug abuse. Counseling education should be introduced in schools to prevent those who have already engaged in the act.

    HAWKING, MAIDSHIP, APPRENTICESHIP AND GIRL-CHILD ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS, ILORIN-WEST LGA, KWARA STATE

    Failure of the government in its obligations to provide free or subsidized education to its citizenry has further played the economically disadvantaged parents to engage their girl children in street hawking, house maidship and apprenticeship so as to cushion the effects of financial difficulty threating their lives without minding the consequence of their action on their children. This study aimed at examining the resultant effects of street hawking, house maidship, apprenticeship on female student academic performance in senior secondary school in Ilorin west local government area of kwara state. Purposive sampling technique was adopted to select three hundred (300) female students from ten (10) secondary schools in the local government area. The instrument administered to collect data and information are profoma and questionnaire, using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Statistic to test the three hypotheses generated in the study. The outcome of the study revealed that street hawking, maidship, apprenticeship had significant relationship on academic performance of girl child in secondary schools. Based on the findings, it is recommended that government should make education free for all and sundry and provide free textbooks, stationary, uniform and free meals that will enable children of the less privileged attend schools without complaint.

    Influence of Family Background on Academic Performance of Senior Secondary School History Students in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State

    This study examined the influence of family background on academic performance of Senior Secondary School History students in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State. The population comprised of all 450 History students in 80 Public Senior Secondary Schools in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 30 schools from 80 Senior Secondary Schools in the Metropolis, which consist Ilorin East, Ilorin South and Ilorin West Local Government Area respectively. The target population was SS 2 History students, while Krejcie and Morgan Table was adopted to select 210 out of 450 History students from the Senior Secondary Schools in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State. A researcher-designed questionnaire titled “Family Background and Academic Performance Questionnaire (FBAPQ)” with a reliability coefficient of 0.69 was used for data collection in the study. The hypotheses formulated in the study were tested using t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. The finding of the study revealed that there was significant difference in academic performance of History students in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State based on parental occupation, parental level of income and parental educational background. Based on the findings, it is recommended that parents and guardians should devote more time for the children at home and pay serious attention to the academic needs of their children. Similarly, government, educators and policy makers should gear up action to integrating parents into the educational activities of their wards.

    Influence of Reward and Punishment on Academic Performance of Secondary School History Students in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State

    In order to avoid creation of anxiety that causes loss of concentration, fear, distortion and poor learning attitude from the students, teachers need to use commensurable punishment that can bring about a desirable behaviour as well as the reward that will encourage students to acquire skills and knowledge for their own development, not for mere marks. Thus, this study aimed at examining the influence of reward and punishment on academic performance of History students in Senior Secondary School in Ilorin metropolis of Kwara State. Simple random sampling technique was adopted to select 27 History teachers and 90 History students from the nine (9) selected Senior Secondary Schools in Ilorin metropolis as a sample for this study. The instrument administered to collect data and information are questionnaire and profoma, using Pearson product moment correlation statistics at 0.05 level of significance to test the three hypotheses generated in the study. The findings revealed that there was a significant relationship between teachers' frequent use of reward, punishment and academic performance of History students’ in Ilorin metropolis. Based on the findings, it is recommended that teachers should cultivate the habit of using reinforcement techniques that would encourage learners to put in extra efforts toward learning. Also, they need to understand that punishing students cannot determine an excellent academic performance. Therefore, there is need for the teachers to minimize the use of punishment so that students can perform better in schools.

    PERCEPTION OF HISTORY TEACHERS ON THE USE OF ICT FACILITIES FOR TEACHING HISTORY IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ILORIN, NIGERIA

    The study examined the perception of History teachers on the use of Information and communication Technology facilities for teaching History in secondary schools in Ilorin Metropolis which comprised Ilorin East, Ilorin South and Ilorin West of Kwara State, Nigeria. The population of this study covered all three hundred and forty-five (345) History teachers in public and private senior secondary schools. Simple random sampling technique was adopted to select thirty (30) public and twenty (20) private secondary schools while two (2) History teachers were randomly selected from each of the selected senior secondary schools to make a total number of one hundred (100) History teachers as sample for the study. A researcher’s designed questionnaire tagged “Teachers Perception on the Use of ICT Facilities Questionnaire (TPUICTFQ) was used as an instrument to collect data. In order to validate the research instrument, the draft was presented to two lecturers in the Department of Arts Education, and two experts in the field of Test and Measurement, Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin for vetting. All the corrections made were effected, then, the final questionnaire was drafted. The reliability of the instrument was established using test re-test method which yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.61. Percentage and mode were used to answer the research question, inferential statistic of independent t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were also used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that the use of ICT facilities have positive effects on the teaching and learning of History subject in secondary schools because it eases teachers’ instructional presentations, enhances teachers’ psychomotor domain in handling ICT facilities for teaching History as well as retain students’ knowledge of historical issues and events effectively. It was therefore recommended among others that History teachers should integrate ICT facilities for teaching so as to equip students with necessary skills and knowledge that will not only enable students optimize learning in a fast changing world but would also foster active and autonomous lifelong learners.

    Re-crafting Private Secondary Schools in Kwara State for Competitive Advancement in the 21st Century the Challenges and Prospects

    Privatisation initiative has greatly assisted in the expanding access to secondary education in Nigeria and most especially in Kwara State. Nowadays, they are facing many challenges ranging from funding, facilities, equipment, condition of service, low quality of teachers, low student enrolment and irregular inspection among others, which undermine the achievement of the stated objectives in the curriculum of secondary education for competitive advancement in the 21th Century. Thus, this study examined the re-crafting of private secondary schools in Kwara State for competitive advancement in the 21st Century: The Challenges and The Prospects. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 5 officials of Kwara State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development; 3 officials of Kwara State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) and 3 officials of Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). Also, purposive sampling technique was used to select all 188 private secondary schools in Kwara State and from the schools, purposive sampling technique was used to select all the Proprietors; Principals; 1 official from the Parent-Teachers Association (PTA) and 1 experienced teacher from each of the schools to make a total number of 763 respondents. The findings revealed that private secondary schools in Kwara State were staffed with qualified teachers and despite various challenges faced, the population tendency shows that a large market exists for private school providers. Based on the findings, it is recommended that government should collaborate with owners of private schools and accept them as partners in providing quality education for national development. Likewise, the proprietors should not compromise the standard they have been sustaining by ensuring that qualified applicants are recruited in order to realised the set goals.

    Teachers' Motivation as Determinant of Academic Performance of Secondary School History Students in Ilorin, Kwara State

    This study examined the teachers’ motivation as a determinant of academic performance of secondary school History students in Ilorin, Kwara State. The population of this study comprised all History teachers and students in 184 public senior secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis of Kwara State, while the target population were History teachers and SS 3 History students from the nine (9) selected senior secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis which involved of Ilorin East, Ilorin South and Ilorin West respectively. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 27 History teachers and 108 History students from the nine (9) selected senior secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis to make a total number of 135 respondents as a sample for the study. The instrument administered to collect data and information for this study are questionnaire and profoma, using inferential statistics of Pearson product moment correlation statistics at 0.05 level of significance to test all the three hypotheses generated in the study. The findings revealed that there was significant relationship between teachers' motivation, professional development, remuneration and academic performance of History students’ in Ilorin metropolis, Kwara State. Based on the findings, it is recommended that government should ensure that teachers are well-paid(salaries and allowances) as and when due and organise professional development programmes so as to encourage teachers to put in their best in carrying out their duties which in-turn could improve good academic performance of History students.

    Utilization of Learning Resources in Teaching and Learning of History in Senior Secondary Schools in Ilorin-West LGA, Kwara State

    Every year, when the results of public examinations such as the WAEC and NECO are released, some findings reveal that there has always been mass failure in History as a subject. It appears that the topics in History pose serious problems of comprehension to students. These topics cannot be taught effectively without the use of relevant learning resources to make learning practical and meaningful. Thus, this study examines the utilization of learning resources in teaching and learning History as a subject in Senior Secondary Schools in Ilorin West Local Government Area, Kwara State. Purposive sampling was adopted to select forty-five (45) History teachers as a sample for the study. Questionnaire were administered to collect data while descriptive statistics of mean was used to answer the three research questions generated in this study. The findings revealed that government did not provide funds to procure learning resources for the schools. The school managements were unable to supervise History teachers to make use of the available resources and this prevents students from participating actively in the class. Based on the findings, it is therefore recommended that government should provide enough funds to purchase learning resources for History subject. Also schools management should sensitize History teachers frequently on how to make History lessons practical and meaningful to the students and the use of appropriate learning resources so that students can have adequate knowledge of the subject.
