Item PERCEIVED FORMS, CONSEQUENCES AND STRATEGIES FOR CURBING EXAMINATION MALPRACTICES IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ASA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA(Department of Educational Foundation, University of Ilorin, 2019) IYEKOLO, Alexander Olushola; OKAFOR, Ifeoma P.; YAYI, Timothy Opeyemi; AKINSEMOYIN, Lasbat O.; AHMED, Mustapha B.Examination malpractice is one of the contemporary problems affecting the education sector today. This study examined the perceived forms, consequences and strategies for curbing examination malpractices in schools in Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State. This study made use of descriptive survey research type. The populations for this study were secondary school students in Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State. 200 students were sampled for this study using simple random sampling technique. A researcher designed questionnaire with a reliability coefficient of 0.81 was used for data collection. Data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistic (mean and rank order) to provide anwers to the research questions while the hypotheses were tested using t-test. Findings obtained from this study revealed that the perceived forms of examination malpractices are giraffing, impersonation or misrepresentation, written notes on Examination desks,walls, palms,clothes and electronic devices; coded sign Language, bribery, exchanging answer booklets, Submission of multiple Scripts. Consequences of examination malpractice lead to students’ suspension from the school; denies students from studying hard to acquire adequate knowledge; leads to students’ withdrawal from the school among others. The perceived strategies for curbing examination malpractices include controlling over population of examinees, providing strict and adequate supervision among others. There was no statistically significant difference in the perceived strategies for curbing examination malpractices based on gender and school type.It was therefore recommended that Students, teachers, parents and school management have roles to play to curb examination malpractice. Attention should also be paid to skills acquisition rather than too much emphasis on certificates, exams should be conducted in spacious halls to allow enough space between examinees. Guidance and counseling programmes should be organized often to change the perception of students towards examination malpractices.Item A SURVEY OF DIFFICULTIES AND COPING STRATEGIES EXPERIENCED BY LEADERSHIP OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN KWARA STATE, NIGERIA(Department of Counsellor Education, Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, 2017) IYEKOLO, Olushola A; ABDULAZIZ, Isiaka; OKAFOR, Ifeoma P; AKINSEMOYIN, Lasbat O.; ONIYE, Ridwan KThis study investigated the difficulties encountered and the coping strategies applied by administrators of private and public secondary schools in the governance of their scools in Kwara State. Population for the study included persons in the administrative cadre of public and private secondary schools in the State. The sample consisted of 60 principals and 146 Vice-principals selected using stratified random sampling technique. Researcher developed a questionnaire titled “Difficulties and Coping Strategies Questionnaire (DCSQ)” was used for data collection. Content validity was used to validate the instrument while a reliability coefficient of 0.61 was obtained. The data were analyzed using percentages and t-test statistics at 0.5 alpha level of significance. Findings revealed that leaderships of private and public secondary schools in the State encountered inadequate facilities and inapplicability of some of the school policies enacted by the State Government. The findings further revealed that the school administrators delegated authority, utilized PTA and hosting community resources and used collaborative interpretation of school policies as coping strategies to handle the difficulties and these were found to significantly vary on the basis of the administrators’ gender, school type and year of leadership experience. Based on these findings, it was recommended that government and owners of private schools should provide needed facilities for the governance of their schools. They should also make sure that the educational policies enacted for the secondary schools are practicable.Item UPPER BASIC STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION ON THE CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES OF EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE IN ILORIN EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT(Niger Delta Journal of Education, 2018-10) UYANNE, Elizabeth O.; AGUBOSI, Lydia A.; AKINSEMOYIN, Lasbat O.; AJAGBE, Fidelia N.Examination is a potent instrument for assessing the knowledge acquired by humans especially in educational institutions. Examination malpractice is being misconstrued as a way to academic excellence. Examination malpractice in Nigeria in Nigeria has become one of the greatest social challenges that have eaten up deep in into all levels of the educational system. However, this study examined upper basic students’ perception of the causes and consequences of examination malpractice in Ilorin East Local Government. The sample for this study comprised 100 upper basic three students selected from five basic schools. Two research questions and two research hypotheses were generated and raised in this study. Research questions one and two were answered with the use of t-test at 0.05 level of significance. One of the findings of the study revealed that there is no significant difference in the perception of students on the causes of examination malpractice based on gender. It was also found that there is no significant difference in the perception of the students on the consequences of examination malpractice based on gender. Based on the findings, it was recommended that teachers should encourage students to be more proactive and efficient in all aspect of their lives by setting aside a particular time to study everyday so that they can get used to that.
