Item Early Childhood Care Development and Education: Impact, Challenges and Prospects in Nigeria(Journal of Capital Development in Behavioural Sciences, 2016) ABDULWAHAB, R., and KURANGA, Y.A.Early childhood care development and education is an early intervention programme that helps detect problems that might inhibit the growth and survival of the child by nurturing and providing basic skills and ingredients needed for over all development. This paper presents a conceptual frame work of early childhood care development and education and the under lying philosophy as stated in the policy documents. It further examined the impacts, challenges and future prospects of early childhood care and education programmes in Nigeria. It recommended that, recruitment of professional care givers, adopting baseline assessment and sensitization for stakeholders, providing reliable statistical data and figure, creating a child friendly environment, proper funding, monitoring and evaluation among others, will go a long way towards actualizing the lofty dream of early childhood programmes as a basic component of the on-going universal basic education scheme in Nigeria.Item THE EFFECT OF LANGUAGE CODE MIXING AND SWITCHING ON EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN ILORIN METROPOLIS(Journal of Educational Foundations And Development, 2016) ABDULWAHAB, R., and KURANGA, Y.A.This study is centred on the effects of language code mixing and switching on effective teaching and learning in primary schools in Ilorin metropolis. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study. The population for this study consists of all primary school pupils in Ilorin metropolis basically Ilorin South Local Government. Ten pupils were systematically and randomly selected across seven schools amounting to seventy (70) pupils. An adapted questionnaire tagged Language Code-Mixing, Switching & Teaching and Learning Questionnaire (LCMSTLQ) was used for the study. The instrument made up of two sections: Section A, and B. The section A contained items eliciting the bio-data of the participants and general guideline on how to fill the questionnaire appropriately while section B contained statements (15 items) on Four-points Likert Scale requiring the respondents to indicate their level of agreement and disagreement to the proposed items. To ensure the reliability of the instrument, a pilot study was carried out of which twenty five (25) respondents with the same class and attributes but not part of the researcher's proposed sample schools were adopted .The responses obtained were aptly correlated using frequency counts and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient respectively. The findings show that, language code mixing and language code switching is an effective way of teaching and learning in primary schools in Ilorin. It was that, the learners learn well when their teacher mixes or switches effectively in the process of teaching and learning. Teachers should be conversant and fluent in the usage of both mother tongue and English language in schools and sometimes switches whenever the lesson seems less understandable to the learners.
