Abstract
Mass housing schemes policy that was meant to reduce the housing shortage in developing
countries are far from fulfilling their intended purpose. This is due to the fact that the
maintenance issues as a result of negligence either from the occupants, the landlord, and the
government agency are waging wars on the life cycle of the houses in the schemes.
This chapter examines critically some of the causes of maintenance problems, the challenges,
and the way forward to make most of the existing mass housing schemes sustainable in conforms
the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). The study employed a qualitative approach by
reviewing some of the existing literature. It attempts to proffer solutions to prevent the
deterioration of mass housing schemes, and policy implications that are germane to its
sustainability.
