This paper examined the concept of poverty a threat to democratic governance. Poverty (a social problem) as observed in this study, is a great hindrance to democracy. To this extent, the problem of poverty needs to be addressed if true democratic governance is required. It is worthy of note that, the only form of government that guarantees sustainable economic development is democracy and in order to achieve this, the governance issues must resolve the problems of corruption, lack of commitment to the nation’s service, agricultural sector and poor state of infrastructural facilities.en_US
