dc.description.abstractIn all societies, the role of the police as agents of social control is very essential as they preserve law and order. The police when discharging their duties sometimes engage in unprofessional behaviours such as extorting of motorists. At times, motorists refused to corporate to their demands and as a result, this disagreement sometimes leads to violence and many have met their untimely death in the hands of such policemen. The Nigeria Police Force are viewed more as predators rather than protectors as they have become a symbol of unfettered corruption, intimidation, unjustified detention, torture, brutality and abuse. In most instances police-public relationships have been hampered. Thus, this study is aimed at empirically examining the patterns of relationship as occasioned in the bribery exchange between the Police and commercial drivers along the ilorin-Ibadan highways. The study adopted survey research design using qualitative data for analysis. The study also made use of In-depth interview (IDI) and Key informants Interview (KII) for data collection. Purposive sampling technique was also adopted to select the study population. The study found that many commercial drivers were short-changed, intimidated, delayed and extorted by police men along the llorin-Ibadan highway. The study recommended for an improved working condition for Nigerian police.
