Abstract

This study investigated the provision and use of library services for secondary school students in Ilorin South Local Government Area, Kwara State, Nigeria. Using a descriptive survey design, data were gathered from 274 respondents through a structured questionnaire. The study examined the types of library services available, the frequency of use, students’ perceptions of usefulness, and challenges hindering optimal use. Findings revealed that traditional services such as lending, reading spaces, and reference assistance were available in most schools. However, the overall frequency of library use was low. In terms of perception, students rated the usefulness of the library services moderately, but challenges severely hindered access and engagement. Key obstacles identified included lack of current books, limited access time, lack of interest in visiting the library, and the absence of helpful librarians. The study concluded that although libraries remain a vital academic support system, their impact is undermined by inadequate infrastructure, limited engagement strategies, and student disinterest. It recommended regular library orientation, resource upgrades, the inclusion of library periods in school timetables, and capacity-building for library staff.
