Abstract

This study investigates the efficacy and dose-response of an ethanolic extract of Ficus capensis (fig plant) on various biochemical parameters related to cardiovascular disease and erectile dysfunction. Using Gas Chromatography-Flame ionization detector (GC-FID), active phenolic compounds in the extract were identified. Male Wistar rats were divided into groups, with some induced with erectile dysfunction using paroxetine hydrochloride. After induction, groups were treated with either distilled water, sildenafil citrate, or different doses of Ficus capensis extract for seven days. Results showed that Ficus capensis extract significantly reversed the adverse effects induced by paroxetine, including alterations in enzyme activity, lipid profile, nitric oxide levels, and hormone concentrations. The study suggests Ficus capensis extract as a potential co-management option for erectile dysfunction and cardiovascular disease, with the 150 mg/kg dose showing the most effectiveness. Keywords include Ficus capensis, GC-FID, Paroxetine, and Erectile dysfunction.
