Abstract
Climate refers to the end products of the workings of climate system. Climate plays a dominant role on criminal activities. This research examined the impact of climatic variables on criminal activities in Ifako - Ijaiye, Lagos State. The data required for this study include, maximum and minimum temperature, relative humidity, rainfall amount and wind speed; and data on criminal activities were murder, assault, rape, armed robbery, breach of public peace, criminal conspiracy, theft, kidnapping, slave dealings, cultism and burglary. The climatic data were collected from Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), Oshodi, Lagos State; while data on crime were sourced from Nigerian Police Force, Divisional Headquarters, Ifako – Ijaiye, Lagos State. Both descriptive and inferential statistics method were used to analyse the data. Descriptive methods used are mean, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, tables and charts while inferential statistics were linear regression and correlation analysis. Results obtained from descriptive analysis especially mean show the average amount of climatic parameters and criminal activities through the years of study. Results from regression analysis revealed that 91% magnitude of relationship exist between climate and crimes while results from multiple correlation analysis showed that 90% relationship exists between rape and climate. The study however concludes that there are variations in climatic parameters and such variations have contributed tremendously on varying degree of criminal activities in the study area. Therefore, the study recommends that introduction of surveillance cameras and establishment of observation towers to monitor crime would reduce crime rate in the study area.
