Socio-cultural Factors and Corruption Phenomenon in Kwara state

| dc.description.abstract | Most studies on corruption primarily focus on economic factors like unemployment, poverty, economic inequality, neglecting the relevance of socio-cultural factors like social norms, religion and cultural values in shaping or determining corruption in the country. This study explores sociocultural factors and their roles in the perpetual incidence of corruption using Kwara state as the case of examination. 1,175 questionnaires were administered. The analysis of data and test of hypotheses were carried out using the descriptive method as well as inferential statistics of the t-test. It was discovered that there are significant differences between religion, social norms, cultural values and corrupt behaviour in Kwara state. It can be concluded that the roles of cultural factors (religion, social norms and cultural values) cannot be neglected while addressing the perpetual cases of corruption in Nigeria. It is therefore recommended that plans to strengthen the cultural values, social norms, lifestyles and religious institutions towards effective reduction of corruption in the society should be taken seriously. | |
