dc.description.abstractThere are many businesses which have started well, but could not survive long, not because they lack the right strategies to stay in business, but because they lack proper succession policy that guarantee their continuing existence. The objective of this paper is to examine, the influence of effective management succession planning; on Small and Medium Scale enterprises' sustainability, in South West Nigeria. There were 305 copies of structured questionnaires administered to business owners and decision maker in some selected SMEs in Lagos and Ibadan using convenience sampling. 290 of these questionnaires were filled and returned. The formulated hypotheses were tested with t- test statistic technique. The study reveals that effective management succession planning is vital to the survival and continuity of small and medium scale enterprises. The study concludes that Management succession can work in Nigerian SMEs, if appropriate Succession planning principles were followed by the entrepreneurs. The paper recommends that business owners should find the best person to succeed them even after their death, so that business continuity will be achieved.
