Health personnel and patients' relationship is a major source of concern among management of health institutions in Nigeria. This may be related to the view of many Nigerians who have suffered from the non-challant and negative attitude of health personnel. This study therefore, investigated perceived attitudes of health personnel by out-patients of a Teaching Hospital in Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. A total of 30 out-patients in Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital,. Kano (North-West — Nigeria) were selected using systematic random sampling technique. The instrument used for data colleCtion was a Focus Group DiSCUssion Schedule. The validity of the instrument was established by five experts in the Departments of Counsellor Education and Department of Behavioural Sciences, University of llorin, Nigeria. The instrument was pilot tested to assess its usability. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data collected. The findings showed that medical doctors in Nigeria were perceived to have positive attitudes towards patients. However, other health personnel were perceived to have negative attitudes. The study concluded that counsellors need to collaborate with health personnel tosupport doctors to maintain and sustain such positive attitudes. Counsellors should develop a course or programme that would help other health personnel< to develop positive attitudes towards patients. Health personnel generally should take courses in counselling to further enrich their knowledge and skills in handling patients' concerns.en_US
